In 1857, a group of men from Portland, Texas decided to start their own town. The men had been living in the area for many years and were familiar with the natural resources and potential for business that existed in Oregon. They set out to find a location where they could build their town and found what is now Portland, Texas on August 14th, 1857. The town was founded by John Cramer and Isaac Brockman. In 1840 John Cramer settled in what is now Portland, TX while Isaac Brockman settled in what is now Houston, TX. Both men were farmers who enjoyed growing crops and raising livestock. As early as 1847 these two men had built a cabin near present day Houston to provide them with shelter during the winter months. They also erected a log courthouse which still stands today. The first stores opened in Portland about one year after it was established. A post office was organized in 1850 and mail service began operations that year. Portland, Texas is a small town located in the southern Shreveport-Bossier Parish area of Louisiana. It was founded in 1853 by Mormons who had fled to Portland, Oregon during the Utah War. The Mormon population dwindled after they were driven out of Utah and most of their belongings were burned when the U.S. troops invaded that state in 1865. The Portland post office was opened on May 15, 1853, and served until it closed on July 1, 1971. Numerous enterprises were established here such as an armory (1876), a cotton gin (1879), a flour mill (1885), a meatpacking plant (1914), and many other businesses which contributed to its nickname "The Industrial City". In 1916 Portland annexed nearby Houston Heights creating one of America's largest city blocks by area at that time. In 1930 Oregon Route 66 passed through downtown Portland making it one of America's busiest highways during that decade with more than 2 million vehicles passing through each day! The automobile had come to dominate life here and by 1939 all traces of industry had been eliminated save for three smelters operating out of two shipyards built along riverfronts near downtown: Hwy 99Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Inc.; Southern Metal Manufacturing Corp.; and Phelps Dodge Refining & Marketing Co.. With automobiles no longer providing most economic activity Main Street underwent another stageof change with several stores closing including Joes Shoes Store No 1(now Macy’s)and Zenith Radio Corp.(later KFC). However, those closures did not dampen spirits among the original inhabitants who continue to thrive today thanks largely to numerous cultural attractions including MAX Light Rail Transit Corporation’s Pioneer Square Station(opened 1976)and New Seasons Market(opened 1990). Portland has always been home to many culturesranging from Native American traders/ travelers via early French explorers working alongside them before contact stopped; Mexican laborers coming due west seeking grazing land while also contributing produce necessary for their culture; African Americans escaping Jim Crow South worked HERE starting before WWII then moving on once freed black people began migrating northward beginning around 1960; Italians originally from Veneto regionin Italy started settling hereabouts back around 1915 when government offered land free from taxes forigrants;; Koreans fleeing Japanese occupation settled mainly along I-10 east side where new housing developments began being erected soon afterwards…………………..
