Portland, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Comal County. The population was 927 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Texas by population. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Contents History Portland began as a small community on a bend in the Brazos River near present-day Portland, founded by prospectors in 1876 after traveling from New Mexico. In 1912, it became an independent municipality with its own government and police force under Mayor Waddell Dickson Sr., who also served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 and 1959 to 1963. The first post office opened in Portland on October 16, 1876, and was renamed for then-Governor James Fenton of Missouri; however, no mail ever arrived there because there was no post office until 1893 when Congress allocated $5 per month for that purpose. By 1909 Portland had developed into a busy commercial center with five banks and two hotels along Cherry Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North. The Great Depression made life difficult for many residents of Portland during World War II; however, due to its position as an important military port on the Gulf Coast—and its status as one of only two cities (the other being Corpus Christi) within US Naval Base San Antonio—the city experienced little economic damage during that time period. After Pearl Harbor Attack Portland's businesses rallied to support American troops serving in World War II through patriotic events such as parades and bake sales; local restaurants refused service to Axis forces but did not have any problems accommodating American servicemen or their families until February 1945 when all restaurants were ordered closed by Rear Admiral Harry S Truman following his decision to end daylight bombing operations over Japan without prior warning.[1] In 1954–1955 Portland annexed annexation territory from Coryell County which included parts of east Austin[2] before becoming an independent city again with its own elected officials on November 6, 1955 with Waddell Dickson Jr.'s death effective that day.[3][4] On July 1st 1967,[5] concurrent with enactment of laws giving effect thereto,[6][7][8] City Council voted 7-0 against annexing Hockley County subdivision known today as Round Rock off Highway 183 north of town Limits while speaking against proposed annexation openly throughout much debate within Council chambers leading up to votes thereafter;[9][10][11]. In spite of this opposition amongst some City Council members Mayor Beasley created a Special Committee Upon Petition From The People To Study A Possible Annexation Of Round Rock County And Recommend That Such Action Be Taken Which Was Done On November 4th 1971 With The Majority Voting In Favor And Approved By The City Manager Without Opposition From Any Councillors

Those who left started what would become known as The Oregon Trail., moving westwards along the Arkansas River until they reached Denver in February 1848 and then north along the Platte River into Kansas before finally reaching Portland on April 14th. Portland experienced significant growth during its early years as a boomtown due largely to its location at the nexus of trade between Texan farmers and eastern merchants interested in purchasing goods smuggled into Mexico by Mexican smugglers operating out of San Antonio or El Paso. This cross-border commerce fostered an intense commercial culture that continues to influence both Portland’s economy and social fabric today. Additionally, Portuguese immigrants arriving during this time brought with them their own unique style of architecture which can be seen throughout downtown Portland – including some very popular areas such as Pioneer Square and Interstate 5 southbound lanes where you can see several impressive mansions dating back to around 1840 still standing – indicative of how important trade boomed during this period for both locals and visitors alike! In recent decades however, Downtown Portland has undergone a number of revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Charlie Hales (D) who has worked aggressively to make it one of America’s most vibrant urban centers again suffering no less than only two major disasters (the Mayflower fire which destroyed much business & property downtown in 1991; flash flooding that caused catastrophic damage all over downtown late 2000) since he took office in 2009 making him one of just a handful local mayors nationally with direct experience managing large scale disaster response within minutes or hours post-incident!
