Portland, Texas is a small city in the United States located in Hidalgo County. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. The city was founded by Texans in 1836 as an agricultural and ranching community near what is now Buffalo Bayou. In 1849, Portland became one of several municipalities within the newly created Harris County after Texas seceded from Mexico. The term "Portland" first appeared on a deed for property in town given to local citizens by General Sam Houston on July 20, 1851. The name has been borne by both the municipality and its principal thoroughfare ever since- Broadwalk Avenue running through downtown and Broadway connecting it with UptownHouston to the north and MidtownHouston to the south (and continuing eastward along Interstate 610 into Dallas). In 1938, Portland joined Houston's annexation into its metropolitan area as part of a larger project to create a more integrated region including all of Harris County. Downtown business districts were annexed into Houston while other neighborhoods such as Montrose were annexed into Portland.Today, much of Portland's older commercial district remains outside of downtown while newer areas have been incorporated within the core business district including Northwest Third Street between Main and Lamar streets along historic Fourth Ward lines which are aligned with I-10 exit ramps leading away from downtown (northwest side), Pioneer Courthouse Square just west of US 90/Uptown Business District northeast corner between Lamar/First Streets NW and Independence Boulevard NW (southwest side), Grant Park across I-610 from Northwest Third Street northwest corner between Main/Lamar Streets NW and Independence Boulevard NW (southeast side), Southeast Sixth Street SW between I-610 & 15th St SW (southwest side) & Starkweather Place NE - home to many large international companies - annexed onto DowntownHouston over time This system continues with major changes today with additions or deletions of blocks as needed making for some unique urban experiences that make up this rapidly changing metropolis

The city's population grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, reaching over 10,000 by 1860. However, Portland's prosperity ended when the Civil War began. Many of the city's residents fled to Mexico or other parts of the Confederacy, while others joined Union forces. The city saw little interest from developers after the war ended and its economy declined steadily until the late 19th century. In 1900, Portland was annexed into Dallas County, Texas; however, it continued to decline in popularity until it was abandoned in 1920.
