In the early 1800s, Portland, Texas was a small town of about 3,000 people. The residents of this small town were primarily farmers and ranchers. One of the most important aspects of their life was the possession and use of firearms. These firearms were used for protection and self-defense. In 1892, a man named George Stephenson opened a store in Portland, Texas that sold Firearms Supplies. This store became an important source of ammunition and guns to the locals in Portland. In 1951, John Tuggle moved his business from Portland to Austin, TX and reopened his store as Gun Emporium. It is interesting to note that both stores used different types of printing on their t-shirts which helped differentiate them from one another in terms of sales volume and product line. The late 1800s saw an increase in handguns being manufactured in Portland by various companies such as Colt & Company and Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Additionally during WWII many businesses closed down due to wartime surplus goods shortages but Gun Emporium continued operations until 1949 when they closed again due to lack Of customers (Ferguson). Despite these hardships during wartime times Gun Emporium managed To stay open until 1984 when they too closed their doors citing declining sales (Ferguson).
