When Americans began traveling to the Southwest in the early 1800s, they brought with them their firearms and ammunition. The area that is now Portland, Texas was then under Mexican rule and no USA state had been established yet. So when American settlers arrived in this region, they started trading goods with the Mexicans and buying weaponry from them. One of these traders was John Doane who travelled to what is now Portland, Texas in 1836. He became interested in pistols and decided to start manufacturing his own weapons there. From this business venture he learned how important it was for merchants to have reliable firearms on hand so they could protect themselves from bandits and raiders. In 1846 John Doane passed away but his son continued production of pistols at his father's deathbed. During the Civil War many Americans migrated westward seeking new opportunities; one such individual was Abraham Lincoln who decided to move west because he wanted a chance to be an effective leader during wartime. After being elected president, he ordered arms manufacturer Samuel Colt (of Colt Firearms fame) to produce guns for Union forces as part of a supply plan called “the Springfield Doctrine” which aimed to increase artillery firepower while minimizing civilian casualties during the war effort. This order led to Colt creating rifles that could fire multiple rounds per minute instead of just one round like handguns were able to do at that time. The resulting weapon revolutionized warfare by making it possible for armies around the world To date Springfield Armory has manufactured more than 100 million firearms including revolvers, shotguns, assault rifles and machineguns

These bullets were significantly more powerful than any other then available ammunition at the time and quickly became popular due to their lethality on human targets. shortly thereafter they introduced brass cases for this caliber bullet which helped increase accuracy and firepower on pistols and shotguns. In 1887, Benjamin Franklin Colt began producing pistol rounds chambered for both black powder (7 mm) cartridges and metallic cartridges like those used by Smith & Wesson (.45 ACP). These new cartridges featured larger case capacity than previous types which led to increased firepower when fired from pistols or shotguns while also improving accuracy because now each round could be aimed with greater precision
