Port Neches, Texas is a small city located in the county of Port Arthur, Texas. The city was founded in 1879 by General John D. Baylor and was named for him. At that time, the area consisted of only a few hundred acres and had no industry other than farming. However, over time the town grew and became known for its agricultural products and its military installation, Fort Neches Army Airfield. In 1954, Fort Neches was renamed Gulfport Naval Base after it became the home port for American naval vessels during the Korean War. In 1968, Gulfport Naval Base was closed and all of its personnel were transferred to Corpus Christi Naval Station in Texas City. This left Port Neches with just one military installation - Fort Bliss Army National Guard Armory which is currently used as a museum. Throughout its history, Fort Bliss has been host to many events such as concerts by rock groups like White Flag and Faith No More; meetings of the United States Congress; state fairs; rifle shoots; rodeos; duck races and more. Today,Fort Bliss is open to the public on Saturday mornings from 9am until 3pm from May through September inclusive (closed on October 1st). Admission is free but there are several restrictions including an age limit of 21 years or older which must be met before entering the building. There are also several exhibits insideFort Bliss about various aspects of military life including firearms training/use;; World War II U-2 flights over Korea.; The Battle at Gettysburg.; The American Revolution.; The Civil Rights Movement.; etc.). Additionally there are regular air shows that take place every so often around different parts of the base including gunnery range areas where individuals can fire machine guns outfitted with optics called "bullseyes."

Port Neches is a city in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 29,527 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Bastrop County after Springdale. The city is located on the Mississippi River and it has a total area of 7 square miles (18 km²). The first Port Neches community was organized in 1892 by John Hargrave. A cotton gin was built there in 1895 and became an important commercial center for the area. In 1904, two new towns were formed within Port Neches: Commerce and Webster. These communities were consolidated into one municipality in 1955. In 1963, North Texas Power Company purchased land adjacent to downtown Port Neches from the Houston Electric Railway Company for $4 million dollars to build a nuclear power plant. On July 1, 1970, UTEP accepted construction of the plant as a gift from North Texas Power Company and began operation of it that same year under the name "Nuclear Plant Number One". However, problems with uranium mining caused costs to balloon quickly and by 1974 only 16% of electricity delivered to consumers came from nuclear plants; instead much of it came from coal-fired plants statewide. By 1988 management had determined that abandoning Nuclear Plant One would be more costly than continuing operations and decided to sell off all but 5% of ownership to Entergy Corporation for $1 billion dollars ($ when adjusted for inflation). After years of negotiation between Entergy and state regulators they reached an agreement on February 9th 1992 which allowed continued operations at Nuclear Plant One but required Georgia Mining & Energy Co., owner of nearby Candlestick Mine (and owner since 1984of all uranium mining rights within 25 miles radius), to agree not to extract uranium until 1995 or later through binding arbitration; however this condition was lifted on September 25th 1994 following public outcry over cost overruns at Nuclear Plant One & Candlestick Mine combined with environmental damage done during previous production seasons at both mines) . With little left to sell Entergy abandoned Nuclear Plant One & Candlesticky mine completely effective January 6th 1997 becoming part of refinery complex known as Corpus Christi product line just outside town limits

After moving from England in 1837 with his family to make their new home in what is now Northeast Texas they began trading goods with other parts of America piecemeal until they finally had enough land to build their own port where they could process their rice exports directly here at their own expense before shipping it downriver across the open Gulf stream to New Orleans. They achieved this critical milestone by building two wharves based on then existing marshes - one just north or northwest today’s downtown area while another still stands just inside present day Ryan County – both within easy reach today driving distance along Interstate 10 from Houston or Austin depending on your direction looking out over Matagorda Bayou… Today we enjoy wonderful views out our living room window onto Corpus Christi Island adding some extra spice each time you open your door especially if there is a Patriots game going on outside!
