Port Neches is a small town in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1876 by John Nechols and his brother-in-law W. H. Smith as a small farming settlement on the east side of the Trinity River near its junction with the White Oak Bayou. They named it for their father-in-law's birthplace in Northumberland, England: "Neches" meaning "old mill." In 1902, John Nechols donated land to build an electric power plant that would serve the community for forty years; construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1928. The plant produced electricity until it was replaced by natural gas production facilities in 1973. This facility served as an important factor in determining Port Neches' growth from a rural agricultural society into one of greater urban importance over time. After World War II, various businesses relocated to Port Neches from other parts of Texas during what has been called "the industrial boom." These businesses included Bechtel Corporation (now known as Boeing) and Dow Chemical Company (now known as DuPont). As these companies became more established, they attracted local residents who had good working skills and complementary interests with those at those larger companies or who had moved there during wartime shortages due to war effort shortages elsewhere in Texas or Louisiana. This development led to what has been called "the Miracle Mile" because within ten years of its founding, Port Neches had become home to major retail chains such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck & Co., two major banks (First American National Bank and Republic National Bank), three professional sports teams (Houston Astros/National League Champion Houston Colt 45s/American League Champion New York Yankees), four schools including one high school that graduated all but three students required for graduation from public schools throughout Texas; dozens of small businesses; numerous churches; numerous homespun stores; many doctor's offices; several thousand people employed full or parttime outside the agricultural sector—all while remaining self-sufficient with respect to food production and services rendered without need for outside assistance such as trucking In 2005 The Miracle Mile Business Journal ranked Port Nchens #2 out of 688 cities studied for business opportunity rankings

Port Neches is a town in Bell County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bell County. The first post office in Port Neches was established on December 17, 1873. The name of the town came from a bend in the Brazos River where it crossed from Brownsville to Galveston. In 1881, an oil well was drilled by a group of Texans led by John Wesley Hardin near what is now Port Neches and began production. For many years this well provided muchneeded revenue for the small community; however, after learning that high levels of benzene were being produced from the well, local officials decided to shut down production in order to protect citizens and prevent further pollution. The first public school opened in Port Neches on March 10th, 1888. At that time only white children were allowed to attend school; however due to increasing enrollment black students soon realized they had options other than going to schools founded specifically for them such as Mundelein High School which opened its doors in 1912 and White Sands Intermediate School which opened its doors in 1916). In 1920 (the same year as Brown v Board of Education), Port Neches became one of fourteen towns within Texas that ratified the Texas Constitution providing education for all citizens regardless of race or color (it would be another thirty-six years until integrated schools were allowed throughout Texas)).
Port Neches was founded on the Brazos River in 1836 by Texans Robert E. Lee and W. H. Smith. The town grew rapidly, and in 1853 it became a county seat with a population of over 10,000 people. In 1901, Port Neches became part of the new state of Texas. In the 1930s, Port Neches was hit hard by the Great Depression; however, it bounced back relatively quickly during World War II due to its proximity to Dallas and its role as a manufacturing center for aircraft parts and munitions production. Between 1945 and 1950, Port Neches experienced significant growth as an agricultural community with many farmers moving into the area from other parts of Texas to take advantage of its fertile soil and mild climate. However, during the 1960s and 1970s port neches lost some of its economic momentum as industry moved out west or went bankruptcies led to increases in poverty within the town limits. In recent years, though, port neches has seen renewed growth thanks to several new businesses started in recent decades such as construction equipment dealership Bob's Red Mill products or restaurant chain The Wingnut Grille (now defunct).
