Port Neches, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of 2010, it had a population of over 122,000 people and is the largest city in Brazoria County. The Port Neches Museum District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. On July 9, 2009, a $5 million dollar donation from oil and gas magnate Warren Buffet made it possible for the City to purchase an historic telescope used by Admiral Richard Byrd during his Antarctic Expedition in 1928-1929. The telescope is now on display at the Port Neches Museum District within the new museum building that was built for the museum district. The first telescopes were built by William Herschel in 1784 and James Webb began working on his owntelescope project in 1891.
