Port Neches is a town in Victoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name may derive from Spanish meaning " entrance to the bay" or "mouth of the bay." The first permanent settler in Port Neches was James Wetherill in 1828. He named his farm and ranch after Viscount Nelson Weymouth, an English nobleman who had donated land for a port on Galveston Bay. In 1840, J.D. Kinney founded Kinney & Company, a saltpeter company which built one of the first brickyards in Texas and made bricks for many local buildings including the First Baptist Church and Fort Bend County Courthouse. In 1865, Captain Mouton took command of Ulysses S. Grant's Ninth Cavalry Division during the American Civil War and led it to victory at Missionary Ridge near Corinth Pass over Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's army under General Robert Ewell Jr.. On October 8, 1865 while leading his troopers into battle against Union General John Pope's army at Monterrey Flats on Iuka River near modern-day downtown Port Neches, Captain Mouton lost control of his horse and trotted into Rebel lines losing most all of his unit with him along with most of Pope's cavalrymen massacred or captured by Johnston's forces as they tried to retreat back across Iuka River; only 4 Americans (including Captain Mouton) ever survived that engagement including Capturing Major Edwin Walker who later became an important figure in post-war reconstruction in Texas Captain Mouton is buried at Oakwood Cemetery outside Port Neches with other members of his unit interred there along with nine other Union soldiers from nearby Cypress Hill Cemetery who were also killed during that battle including Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Bogue
Port Neches was founded in 1836 by two brothers, John and James Neches. The town was named after the New Orleans-based port of Neches River. The first post office opened in 1839. In 1840, the town had 10 residents and a total of $2,500 in assets. By 1850, Port Neches had 100 residents and $10,000 in assets. In 1860, the population had increased to 350 residents and $20,000 in assets. In 1865, Port Neches became a county seat with land acquired from the Santa Fe Railroad. The population reached 1,100 by 1870 but decreased to 507 by 1880 due to economic reasons associated with the American Civil War. In 1890, Port Neches incorporated as a city under its own government with a total population of 612 citizens. It experienced rapid growth during World War I due to wartime demand for military supplies from Texas ports. However, during World War II it declined again because of industry shift towards production in other parts of America. In 1951 it became an independent city again with a population of 711 citizens).
