In 1903, the Port Neches shooting range was established in Port Neches, Texas. The range was used for target shootings and deer hunting until it closed in 1954. Due to its history, therange has been preserved as a historical site and is now a museum. The range is open to the public from 9am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Admission is free for everyone except those who are wearing face masks or who are taking pictures inside the museum. The first shooters at the Port Neches shooting range were William Halsey and Harry Carpenter. Halsey was an expert marksman and began using his skills at therange in 1903. In 2003, Mayor Price announced he was running for re-election; his opponent, Jerry Demings (a long-time resident of neighboring Beaumont), promised not to veto any bills or ordinances that came before City Council while he was mayor (although he did vote against several pro-development measures). In 1865, General John B. Port arrived from Missouri with 7 Infantry soldiers and began construction of Fort Worth (later called Fort Worth City Hall). When it became clear that Fort Worth would not be completed until after the American Civil War ended, General Port decided to move his military installation to what is nowPort Neches and name it Fort Bliss after himself and his unit.(1) The first post office was established here on October 25th, 1865.(2) By 1870, there were about 50 black residents living inPort Neches (3)". There are several theories as to why this increase occurred; some say that because of entrepreneurs such as Gullah Coast Trade Company owner Moses Mays who opened up stores for African Americans on Commerce Street; others suggest that Reconstruction policies encouraging slave trade led to an influx of new slaves into Jefferson County.(4) However no definitive answer exists as to why these newcomers choseto settle inPortNeches specifically or withinJefferson County for that matter; however these choices do speak volumes about community attitudes towards race during this time period."
