Port Neches is a small town in Limestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first port on the lower Red River was built by Captain John Sibley in 1836 and named Fort Neches after General James Neely Polk's headquarters during the Mexican-American War. The town grew up around this post office and saw two incorporations in 1868 and 1870; both were successful and led to new businesses being started in what had been a single agricultural village. In 1896, Port Neches became one of five townships that formed Dodge City Township, which included Wichita Falls to the south. In 1907, Dodge City Township merged with Limestone County to form Limestone County Municipality. On July 1, 1916, portions of Dodge City Township (including parts of Port Neches) were annexed by Wichita Falls to form Wichita Falls Municipal Corporation. On December 15 of that year, Wichita Falls Municipal Corporation was dissolved and its assets passed into Limestone County Municipality hands as an element of its general revenue stream. On January 1, 1948,limestone county incorporating as a cityofficial pursuant to state Statute 361 provided for Portsmouth annexation by limestone county when it reached a population size above 5500 people; however no annexations took place until 1951 due to a lack of space within limestone county limits-the merger creating Hutchinson/Neches city - effective February 14th,. It was called the “Fenton No1” and had a metal band around the outside of the ear canal that connected directly to an Otoscope Instrument on your head. This type of plug was very important because it allowed shooters to fire their guns without fear of hurting their ears or causing permanent damage to them. In 1907, Swedish inventor Gustav Nyquist submitted his Earplug design to the AAST. The AAST accepted his design, but did not publish it until 1912. In 1912, Shooter Ear Plugs were renamed Gunplugs after new gun regulations were introduced in America which banned handguns (except revolvers) from being carried in public places. Gunplugs became less common after World War I when firearms began becoming more commonly available again throughout America. However, they continued to be produced into the late 20th century until they were gradually replaced by modern hearing protectors such as cochlear implants
