Port Neches, Texas is a town in Coahuila and Mexico. The port was founded by Spanish colonists in the late 18th century as part of the Texas missions. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 109,853 as of 2010. The original settlers in what is now Port Neches were Spanish missionaries who established a mission here between 1793 and 1800. This area became known as Coahuila y Tejas due to its similarity in culture and language to Coahuila, which lies south of Baja California on the Mexican mainland. In1829, Governor James Nechsgrün moved his government headquarters from New Orleans to this new site near present day Port Aransas County when he took office as the first Mexican governor west of Santa Fe de Juárez on November 15th, 1828.
