The town was named after General Houston's brother-in-law Colonel Arthur Ranken by him and his wife Anna Maria Ranken. The first post office was established here on March 12, 1837 under the name "Houston". By 1850, Fort Bend County had been formed from parts of Harris and Montgomery Counties and Houston's post office was moved to Fort Bend County so that it would be closer to resources he coveted for his army commandership campaigns against Mexican forces besieging Austin. The following year saw success as Lt Col George Travis defeated Santa Anna's forces at San Jacinto which helped establish westward expansion for Texans during the early Republic period; although some refer to this victory as "Spud Day" because Lt Col Travis landed his small force ashore with only five men instead of his expected thirty thousand warriors! A week later Austin surrendered unconditionally to Mexican troops following a siege attempt by Maj Gen Antonio López de Santa Anna at San Jacinto Bridge; Texas then became part of Mexico according to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended American-Mexican War (1846-48). As part as part of peace treaty stipulations Texas ceded 1 million acres (all but 350 miles) within present day Dallas/Fort Worth Area including portions east & south of IH 35W & US 290W between Elmhurst Road & Interstate 10E until those lands were properly surveyed and title deeds were issued; these land grants included much valuable timberland especially along Buffalo Bayou!
