The first shipyard was built on current day downtown Port Neches, with additional yards being built along the riverbank north of town. The shipyards closed their doors after the war but reopened in 1927 as a general aviation airport with airline service beginning that year. Whitehead – one of the first municipal officials in Texas – and remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area today. Port Neches was founded by Sam Houston in 1836 as a shipping and trading post on the Red River. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1846, Port Neches became the temporary capital of Texas after Austin was moved from Mexico City. It remained the capital until1857 when San Antonio took over.
