Port Neches, Texas is a city located in the Houston-based Harris County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat ofHouston County and home to many large businesses and other industrial areas. The population was estimated to be over 200,000 as of 2010. The city's history can be traced back to 1851 when the town of Port Neches was established on the east bank of Buffalo Bayou. The community grew rapidly due to its location between two major railroad lines - one linking Galveston with New Orleans through Houston, and the other running via San Antonio to Dallas/Fort Worth. In 1855, an act was passed by Congress providing for port entry at Buffalo Bayou for goods being brought into and out of Texas. The town quickly became a center for trade with settlers from all over South America and Mexico. In 1865, it became one of twenty-six towns in Texans organized as the state of Galveston County under Act No. 184 of that year. The area now occupied by Port Neches came under local control only after Galveston Island had been annexed by Houston in 1872 following a landowning dispute between Sam Houston (the first president of Texas) and General Josiah Boggs (a Confederate general during the American Civil War). As part of this annexation process, most everyone who lived on either island--including those in Port Neches--made their move inland or left altogether; however, some few remaining residents managed to keep their homes while their families went back ashore during high tide or when necessary for ferry travel across Buffalo Bayou (now known as Tomball Creek). In 1907–08, developers interested in building a rail line from Galveston northward discovered what would soon become an important oil field near present-day Orange Beach – well within Porter County – making it possible for new development around this valuable resource rather than waiting for access from Corpus Christi or Clear Lake outsideHouston proper. This led directly to growth around Orange Beach Boulevard throughout much of what is now downtown Port Neches today; activity centered largely around processing crude oil until recently plagueintheouthisarea (<1 mile inland from bayou), which has since shifted significantly towards more recent industries such as manufacturing IT productsand software development services related thereto

The first European settlers in what is now Port Neches were French Canadians who were attracted to the rich bottomlands and natural resources of the area. The settlers arrived during the 1830s and 1840s and by 1851 had built a small community on a bend in Brazoria River called "Neches Landing." In 1853, they named their new town after General Anthony Wayne, who had won fame as an American general during the Mexican-American War. In 1860, Port Neches became a county seat when Tyler County was created from portions of Harris County. As early as 1870, there were plans for retail stores and churches in town. By 1880, businesses had grown to include three grocery stores, six cottonseed oil mills (one owned by John Denton), four sawmills (all run by brothers Isaac and Amos Mills), two liverystable operations (owned by George Foard), four harness shops (run by James Baughman and John Hoggard), one store/ warehouse (owned by Jno. Waddell) and twenty-four homes. During World War II Port Neches residents helped build several airfields near their town including Dowling Airfield which housed over 100 aircraft production lines; Baytown Army Airfield which served as a training ground for fighter pilots; Lewis Field which accommodated bombers; Midway Airport which serviced Boeing B-29 Superfortresses; White Sands Missile Range where anti-aircraft missiles were developed; Fort Worth Army Air Base which served as home to USAAF fighter units until it closed in 1969; Rice University's Medical Center where many service members received health care during World War II The community continued to grow through the years with annexations occurring such as New Hope annexed in 1960 followed by Clearwater in 1970 then Lauderdale Lakes in 1978 before finally being annexed into Port Neches proper in 2000. Today, Port Nechs has more than 2200 residents along with 100 businesses that provide services to its citizens including forty-eight schools within its boundaries providing education for both elementary school students through high school seniors and college students through postsecondary institutions while also employing nearly 400 workers directly or indirectly throughout its various sectors including healthcare provided through Myriad Healthcare Centers while also hosting numerous events annually including Homecoming Weekend & Christmas Eve Parade

In 1881, landowner James Hogg donated 4,000 acres (1 km²) to be used for a port and wharf on the Brazos River near present day Port Neches Elementary School and high school. That same year saw the opening of what would eventually become one of Texas' largest cotton plantations - White Sands Plantation - also known as Hogg's Ranch after its founder and namesake James Hogg. One hundred years later, when interest in port development dwindled with improved transportation options available from Galveston Bay through Houston, White Sands Plantation shuttered its doors for good in 1967 following more than fifty years of production including involvement with both World War I and II; however, remnants can still be seen today along US 290 west of town limits near FM 19606 In 1984-1985 local developers spearheaded an effort to bring a casino to Port Neches which failed due to lack of voter support but did pave way for other business ventures such as retail shopping malls being built throughout Harvey County over subsequent decades culminating with Walmart coming online in 2002 anchoring much needed growth around town center area leading up until recent times whereupon many residents have taken to using their time occupying various city hall functions instead
