Today, Port Neches is one of few remaining rural Bastrop County communities that still retains some significant aspects of pioneer life and architecture such as blacksmithing shops and barns dating back to before oil production began in Texas in 1901 started to decline; however, many homes have been replaced with newer model homes or apartments since then due to increased development within the city limits of Houston along with an increase in traffic and air pollution from nearby factories which has caused health concerns for residents over recent years
