The cotton and cattle industries were strong here, and the town prospered thanks to its location and access to water. However, by 1830,Port Neches had slipped into decline. The arrival of railroads in the 1840s made it easier for farmers to get their products to market, and competition from other towns led to job losses and a decrease in population. In 1848, while still living in Port Neches, surveyor General James Hogg discovered oil beds at Sam Houston National Forest. This event led to an increase in business activity in the town as people began looking for new sources of income. By 1870, however, most of the businesses had closed or been replaced by others with more modern methods of doing business. With no new industry developing in Port Neches after 1850, its economy slowed down even further and it lost its status as a major port city. By World War I, however, it had regained some of its former prosperity due to increased military activity here along with developments such as shipbuilding that qualified it for membership in the New Orleans-Texas Section of the American Waterways Congress (AWC). In 1921-1922, during World War II., Port Nechos shipyard produced over 1 million tons of warships including tanks and bombers; this helped revive the town's economy once again. Today, Port Neches is a thriving community with many businesses active within its boundaries: from manufacturing to retail space; there is plenty of opportunity for growth here!

The first white person to set foot on what is now Port Neches was Hugh Lawson in 1836. He explored the area and named it after his native town, Neches, France. In 1838, John C. Campbell established a post office at Port Neches and began selling goods transported by horseback from the adjacent Texan towns of Clear Lake and Victoria. By 1840, the port had been developed into a commercial center that became an important transportation hub for Texas. The first lighthouse was built at Port Neches in 1841 and the first store opened in 1845. In 1865, a wharf was built at the port to facilitate ship docking and cargo shipping. The harbor grew into one of the most significant commercial centers in Texas during its early years.
