The town of Port Neches, Texas was founded in 1871 by Captain Edward C. Smith and his family. The town's name comes from the Neches River, which is located in the town. The river was named after General James Wilkinson, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the city of Port Neches was founded adjacent to the original town. In 1966, President Lyndon B Johnson signed a bill that made it a criminal offense for anyone to possess any firearm on their property without a license or registration. This law lasted until 1968 when it was repealed by Congress due to public opposition. In 1970,Port Neches became one of thirty towns in Texas that were consolidated into the city of Houston. Since then, Port Neches has seen an increase in business and development as it becomes home to several high-tech companies and other businesses such as KFC Landfill and Hobby Lobby Incorporated.

Port Neches is a town in Victoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,702 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first white settler in what is now Port Neches was John Cook in 1855. Cook and his family were land speculators and adventurers who journeyed from Illinois and Missouri to purchase tracts of land in Victoria County. In 1857, they erected a log cabin on their property which served as their home for the next 54 years. On December 12, 1859, John Cook married Sarah Hogg of Carrollton and they started a new life with six children: five daughters and one son. The post office called Port Neches "Neches" because Captain Nemo had landed there on October 26, 1836 while exploring the Trinity River system for potential cotton plantations. The name stuck because it could be spelled either "nemesis" or "nelsa". In 1870, James Waring established a sawmill at Port Neches which became one of the largest mills in Victoria County. Waring operated his mill until 1907 when he sold it to Atherton Mills Corporation which continued to operate it until 1984 when it closed down due to economic problems. In 1971, engineer Rufus Ewing designed an all-steelport facility that allowed Canadian National Railway (CNR) to increase its capacity by 50%. At this point CNR decided not to renew their lease so port operations ended on July 1st 1974 after more than 350 years of service! A year later on September 11th 1975 local businessmen Arturo Ruiz Jr., Jerald Gentry and Bobby Sands organized the "First Texas Day Parade" being held annually at 7 p.m.. This parade showcased local businesses such as banks & grocery stores along with floats made entirely out of cast iron cookware purchased from various suppliers throughout the state! The parade route took participants around downtown Port Neches before ending up at Gulf Station where refreshment was provided! On February 22nd 1979 Microsoft opened its first regional office outside Washington D.C., located in Round Rock South near IH-35 & Loop 410 interchange (the original corporate campus). At that time Microsofts then president Paul Allen said about this location "...we felt like we were living inside our own company again." NWT's current/original physical plant followed suit less than two months later when Microsoft leased 100 acres from Asplund developer Harry Asplund Sr.) just east of HWY 90 off FM 471 south across from Gulf Station restaurant - making Northwest TX one big Corporate Campus!!
