Port Neches was founded in 1875 by John W. Pemberton and named after its then-nearest neighbor - Neches River. At that time it consisted of only a few homes and a post office. The first store opened in 1876 on FM 1960, just outside the present day town limits of Port Neches. In 1878, the Town Board voted to name the new community "Port Neches" after General George Boggs who had served as military governor of Texas from 1861-1865 and as commissioner for Indian Affairs under President James Kenedy. General Boggs donated land to make up what is now Port Nech's downtown district including much of what are today streets and blocks within the present boundaries of town center - including Alamo Park (now Brady Drive). It didn't take long for Port Neches to become known for its fashionable shopping districts around Alamo Park - anchored by Sears & Roebuck, Jiffy Lube and Marshall Field's stores between1900-1920s - as well as its many fine schools including Baylor University (opened in 1901), Stroudsburg College (1905) and Rice University (1909). By 1911, nearly all of the original buildings had been replaced with modern structures; only three churches remain from that early era: First Baptist Church (founded 1886), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church/Stroudsburg Chapel (founded 1893) and Christmastime services at Baylor were still being held at historic First Baptist until 1951 when all storefront church functions were moved into newly constructed facilities on Main Street across from Aldrich Museum in downtown Houston

Port Neches is a town in Jasper County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,671 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Illinois and Indiana. The first post office in Port Neches opened in 1885. In 1909, the town became one of the original 83 towns that were created during the Consolidation of Texas. The town has grown steadily since then, and its population reached 3,821 as of the 2010 census. The history of Port Neches goes back to 1881 when a group of pioneers from Illinois and Indiana landed on what is now known as Baytown Island near present-day Port Neches. After trading goods with local tribes for food and materials they set out on foot to find land where they could build their own homes and mills. They arrived at what is now Baytown Island on December 20th, 1881 after spending two weeks sailing across Lake Michigan on an oarboat called "Oscar". After landing they erected small huts made from mud bricks which served as their home until they found suitable land further down the coast. This early settlement would eventually grow into what is now known as Port Neches due to its proximity to Chicago and other major urban centers during the late 19th century. In 1909, during much discussion about how to improve communications between various parts of Texas there was talk about forming a new county specifically for those living within Jasper County - something that didn't happen until 1914 when Brazoria County was formed from portions of Jasper County including part of present day Port Neches . During World War II many residents moved into Fort Worth due to rationing which caused great economic hardship for many people in rural areas like those living within Jasper County . As a result many businesses closed up shop including severalfactories located within today's downtown area around US Highway 59/US Highway 281 . Despite this difficult time some members of the community rallied together to help those affected by war efforts such as selling eggs door-to-door or working odd jobs at nearby military bases while others took up farming or manufacturing opportunities available outside city limits In 1951 not long afterPort Neches had been formally designated as a Town by then Governor Coke Johnson it also elected its first Mayor - J C King who would serve until his death in 1966 . Over time more services were added such as water system installation (1948), electric service (1960), library (1965), fire protection system (1974) and police department (1978). Today most functions are provided by both City Hall & Police Department although City Hall does offer municipal court services
