Port Neches' gun lights have been a part of its community for many years. The first gun lights were installed in the town in 1892, and they became popular because they helped officers navigate night streets. They also allowed citizens to see approaching vehicles and make arrests. In 1916, the city decided to install more than one light per block in order to help with nighttime navigation. The gunsights continued to be popular until the early 1970s when electronic devices became more common. In 1971, Port Neches City Council voted to stop using gunsights on then-everyday streetlights because they were no longer effective at preventing crime or providing illumination during darkness. However, they continue to be used as part of Signage Districts throughout the city today.

Port Neches, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and is the county seat of Neches County. The population was 105,823 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Neches County and one of Topeka's two largest cities by population after Topeka. The area that now constitutes Port Neches was first settled by Native Americans in what is now central Texas about 9,000 years ago. The first European to visit this area was Captain Juan De La Salle on September 2, 1541, when he sailed into what is now known as Port Neches Bay on his flagship "San Diego". He described it as a bay with a long island in it that looked like an “island of silver” because its surface looked like polished metal (Lubbock 1998). The area became part of Spanish Texas during the presidencies of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and saw heavy Mexican Ranching activity until 1836 when Mexico ceded Texan independence to America following their war for independence against Spain. In 1838, John Cordero founded an approximate town site called Red River Valley which would later become Port Neches (Neely 1988). After Republication in 1845 following President James Kossuth's proclamation that all public land within Kansas be given to American settlers including those who had lost their land in Mexico during the Mexican-American War, property owners began surveys for townships which were named after counties within Kansas - primarily Dallas and Fort Worth - but no such township was created for Port Nechs County until 1850. As a result of this lack of organized government within portnechs county there was also little development occurred until shortly before World War I when local citizens banded together to form the First Nations Builders Committee which helped increase commerce along various natural resources rich local soils while pushing for new schools and hospitals (Clemente 1993). During World War II many civilians from nearby Midway Island decided to move downriver due to shortages of food items brought over by troops fighting on both fronts (Klein 1990). When restrictions were placed on inland shipping after Pearl Harbor many residents decided to head downriver where they built themselves homes around used shipyards found near Corpus Christi moored at Bolivar Shipyard just off FM 727 outside present day downtown Port Neches(Fowler 1967). By 1970 more than half a century later almost every main thoroughfare within city limits traveled through or passed through either Houston or San Antonio so much so that Interstate 10 was rerouted southward through neighboring Brazoria County rather than northwest throughportnECHs COUNTY(Fowler 1967; Sheppard 1984; Sartorius 1994). Today as fishing has become increasingly popular due to increased numbersof sturgeon present throughout much parts of Gulf Coast watersports have taken center stage with both windsurfing/fishing facilities popping up along Intracoastal waterways throughout Lower Rio Grande Valley Portsmouth TXE(Dixon 2007) Oil Refineries continue production adjacent intrastate highways offering employment opportunitiesalong I-10 corridor north towards Brownsvilleand west towards Laredo . Economic diversification has leadto significant growth recently with several large shopping malls existingin southeastern Brazoria Countysouthwest side near Clear Lake Bridge Village malland east side near Goliad Mallallowing residents accessto major metropolitan areas without havingto leave their communities.(Hernandez 2005)Today portnechs county ranks tenthlargest in Texas with an estimated populationof 281,021 making it home to more jobs than any other municipalitywithin Travis County combined.(Hernandez 2005)

Bowen headed an expedition that explored what is now Galveston Bayou in 1871. After finding no suitable sites for a port on Galveston Island, Bowen decided to settle in what is now Port Neches on land he purchased from the Tejanos natives. Boat traffic between Houston and Galveston increased after the opening of the Houston-Galveston Railroad in 1881. This new line allowed passengers and goods to be transported directly fromHouston to Galveston without having to go through Corpus Christi or San Antonio first! Consequently, many workers who previously worked at various shops and businesses aroundHouston began moving into Port Neches to enjoy this new development
Port Neches was founded in 1881 by a group of businessmen and farmers who sailed from Savannah, Georgia on the brig C.F.M. Adams. The town was named for General Houston Neches, who had been President of Texas in 1830 and again in 1836-37. The town site was donated by Neches to the community in 1881, and construction began on the first courthouse and schoolhouse in that year. In 1886, Port Neches became a city with its own government and police force. The first mayor of Port Neches was A.B. Armstrong; he served until 1889 when he was succeeded by Jeptha Hines. The early years of Port Neches were prosperous because cotton grew abundantly here due to the rich soil and good water resources available throughout the area. However, as times changed and economic conditions deteriorated, so too did Port Niques fortunes; during World War II it became a dumping ground for military equipment, munitions, aircraft parts and other materials left behind by Americans fighting in Europe or Japan . In recent years there has been an effort to revive the economy of Port Neches through development projects such as new businesses startups,,and redeveloping older properties into mixed-use buildings designed for modern living styles
