Port Neches, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas about 25 miles east of Houston on the Gulf Coast. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan statistical area. The name "Neches" comes from an early English settler, Nicholas Neeson, who purchased land in 1836 and built a cabin there. The community was founded as a cotton mill settlement in 1857 by Oilman John Sweeny and his family after they discovered oil reserves near Stonewall Jackson Lake. Sweeny named his mill Port Neches because he thought it would be easy to find someone to do business with in this new location. The first stores opened in Port Neches in 1865 and within ten years, it had become one of the largest cotton mills in Texas. In 1917, during World War I, Port Neches became home to America's first military airfield when it was donated by then-Governor James Meche for use as a training ground for American servicemen serving overseas. Today, both Fort Sam Houston National Military Park and Memorial Airport are located adjacent to the town limits. In 1969, Mayor Clyde Denton designated Port Neches asTexas' official city counselor seat after becoming mayor of Houston's inner city district; he later served as mayor of Dallas before being elected to serve out his term as mayor of Houston in 2014

Port Neches was founded in 1836 by Captain James Fenton and his brother, William. The town was named after the navigational outpost of Neches River at the mouth of the river. After years of development, Port Neches became a thriving port with a population of around 1,000 in 1840. By 1860, the town had grown to over 10,000 people and it remained an important stop on the Texas-Mexico border for almost two decades. In 1887, Port Neches was renamed Corpus Christi after Pope Pius IX's visit to Mexico City. The city experienced another boom period during World War II as military facilities were developed in nearby San Antonio and Port Neches helped accommodate a large influx of soldiers from all over the country. The post-WWII civilian boom slowed down significantly in the early 21st century as technological advancements made port transportation less necessary and new shipping terminals were built closer to downtown Corpus Christi. However, there has been recent growth in cargo handling and logistics services due to its location within easy access to major highways and airports
