Port Neches is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX Combined Statistical Area. The area now known as Port Neches was laid out by John White in 1836 and named for him. He donated land to the government for a military post on the bayou that became Fort Bend County. The town's first settlers were Dutch residents who established a trading post there in 1838. In 1840, Major General Zachary Taylor founded West Point College in nearby Victoria and sentFactor Francisco Medina from Port Neches to teach English there; Medina became one of Taylor's aides-de-camp and acquired land near where Port Neches now stands. In 1849, Sam Houston married Maria Elena Jiménez de la Garza y Mejía, daughter of José Miguel Jiménez y Pacheco, one of Mexico City's largest landowners and influential citizens. She brought with her two children: Sam Houston Young (1850–1937) – later president of Republic of Texas (1945–69), ambassador to France (1963–74), and AnnaMaria "Mamacita"Houston (1854–1947)—whom he renamed after his wife's father when she became queen consort of Spain in 1936 as Queen Elizabeth II. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon attacked Fort Worth while its defenders were assembling supplies at Buffalo Bayou; Union Colonel James Longstreet ordered his men not to fire until they saw three lines of human beings Costume soldiers coming down Buffalo Bayou—which they did not do because they thought it was an attack; Lyon took 20 prisoners before withdrawing into Mexico City without further loss or damage to either side. A few years later another attack on Fort Worth by Confederate forces resulted in the death of five Union soldiers; Union Captain Samuel Denton organized a cavalry charge that drove them back across Buffalo Bayoushipping their horses into cover so that they could reload their cannons again before continuing their assault Houston annexed what is now Brazoria County on November 3rd 1870 becoming the 30th state in America; he announced his intent to make Brazoria County an incorporated municipality within twelve days which it was on January 17th 1871 At this time port neches had just over 100 people living here single family homes were built mostly along railroad tracks

Since it's inception as a small community near Houston, Port Neches has experienced significant growth over time with annexations by other municipalities throughout its history including Tomball (1906), League City (1963), Sugar Land (1974), Baytown (1990) and now McAllen-Edinburg-Mission County (2015). Port Neches was founded in 1836 by Captain John A. Neches and his brother-in-law, General James H. Brooke. The town was named for the night of November 15, 1835, when a storm swept across the area and destroyed several homes. The town flourished until the early 1800s when it began to lose its population as travelers moved away or became richer. In 1865, Port Neches became a county seat after being chartered by the Texas Legislature.
