A post office called Port Neches was established in 1836, but no residents lived there until 1850 when a group of Irish immigrants from Ireland settled here and named it after their homeland. In 1875, American Civil War veteran General James Longstreet fought his last battle at this location before being killed in action nearby two years later. In 1898 white farmers bought land east of the Trinity River from the Kiowas and founded Port Neches as a community with a Baptist church, school, grocery store and other institutions. The city's growth accelerated during World War II time as local companies produced munitions for the war effort. The port became an important center for transportation during that time as well as providing jobs for many locals including fishermen, truck drivers and even some members of Congress during wartime period (1942-1945). As part of efforts to revitalize downtown Port Neches following its 2004 designation by Texas Monthly magazine as one of "the 10 most creative cities in Texas", plans are underway to rebuild portions of historic buildings on First Street between Broadway and Elm Street which were destroyed in a fire that damaged much of downtown Port Neches on July 14th, 2006
Before the arrival of the United States, Port Neches was a small seaport on the bayou that served as a stop for goods coming from New Orleans. The town grew quickly after Mexican traders started trading here, and by 1836 it had reached its current size. In 1849, Fort Bend County was formed from part of Texas and Port Neches became one of its counties. The town continued to grow steadily untilra-pidly by World War II when it experienced an influx of refugees from Japan caused by the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
