In 1840–1841 Major James Bowie explored and surveyed much of what would become Port Neches County when he led an expedition named after him that reached as far north as present-day Huntsville and east to present-day Beaumont before returning home sick with yellow fever just prior to its completion trip across America’s Lone Star State The first school in what now constitutes Port Neches County was built on a farmstead nearpresent-dayNechs Cityon October 26th 1865 by Mrs.(Gertrude) Laddan under contract with East Louisiana School District No 1 for $4 per month payable semiweekly into April 1865 In 1868 a post office called “Nechs City” was opened at what is now the intersection of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now IH 10), FM 535W (now TX 59) & FM 620W (now US 69). When Gertrude Laddan moved from her farmstead to meet her educational obligations she took up residence in a log cabin near today’s downtown #NechsCity which she christened “The Prairie Home Depot” It should be noted that duelling pistols were not common tools or items during this time so there may have been some confusion regarding who actually built which structure! In 1870 Gertrude Laddan donated land off FM 620W next door to her current propertyline for a new school district; Galveston Independent School District No 1 In 1922 Dr Wm Hodge donated land between US 69 & IH 10E forming what became Plaza Drive today . This donation supported many years worth of additions including an addition classroom building & gymnasium/ auditorium

The name may be derived from the Neches River and its tributaries. The first post office in Port Neches opened on October 1, 1847. German settlers built homes around what is now downtown Port Neches and began to plant crops in 1850. In 1853, the U.S. Post Office moved from Galveston to Port Neches and named it after Major General James Hogg of the Confederate army who had commanded an expedition against American forces at Galveston Bay two months earlier. During World War I, Port Neches played a key role as an airfield for the Allied pilots flying overTexas during the war effort; one of these airfields was also known as "Nechesville" because of its location near present-day Main Street and Missouri Avenue. This project will result in incremental closure of Second Street between US Highway 310W & Interstate 610E from December 2020 thru May 2021 .
