Port Lavaca was founded in 1884 by John S. Hastings and his brothers, Capt. Alfred and James Hastings. The town was named after the Lávaca River, which flows through the town. The first store in Port Lavaca opened in 1886. By 1896, the population of Port Lavaca had grown to over 100 people. In 1916, the Texas Railroad Commission approved a plan for the construction of a pipeline from Corpus Christi to La Junta, Colorado, which would connect with railroads near Dallas. This would greatly increase trade between Texas and Colorado. The buildings that remain in Port Lavaca today were built during this time period as part of the railway project. The oil industry arrived in Port Lavaca in the early 1920s and began to grow rapidly. By 1923, there were 10 rigs active in drilling off of Port Lavaca's coastlines; however, only one rig ever produced oil commercially from these rigs. Production stopped at this point because ofarthritis caused by exposure to salt water while working offshore. In 1941, shortly after World War II began, a group of businessmen decided to start an agricultural community called Farmingdale on what is now called State Highway 377 east of town limits (the old U-Haul lot). They named their new community after nearby Corpus Christi and started marketing their product there under the name "Port Laveca." At first it was just a few hundred acres but soon enough they had developed into what is now known as one of Texas' leading agriculture communities with more than 8 million square feet of cultivated land statewide!
