Port Lavaca, Texas is a small town located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Matamoros-Matamoros metropolitan area. The history of Port Lavaca goes back to 1851 when it was founded by José de la Vega and his family as an agricultural settlement on the San Antonio River. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 1,500. In 1881, La Vega bought land beyond the current town limits and established what became known as Navarro County. In 1902, he donated 640 acres (240 hectares) to Navarro County for development into a township named after him, Port Lavaca Township. By 1907, La Vega's estate had been subdivided into tracts that were sold to individual settlers. In 1912, Navarro County erected a county courthouse in Port Lavaca Township which remains in use today. That year also saw the opening of the first post office in Port Lavaca with Wm Mathers serving as its first treasurer. The town's earliest industries included agriculture and ranching but during World War II they developed into heavy industry with shipbuilding & fishing among their main businesses until they went out of business during the Great Depression.
