The community was founded by Spanish settlers in 1836 as a rancho (farmstead). After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, it became an important port on the Gulf of Mexico and attracted U.S. traders and travelers to its inland waterways. In 1848, Lavaca was named for General Antonio López de Portillo, who had led Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War and also served as governor of Veracruz province. In 1860, Port Lavaca became a U.S. military post when Major John Copley USN forced Mexican President Porfirio Díaz to cede territory along the coast to America at La Mesilla Treaty. As part of this treaty, López de Portillo donated land near present-day Lavaca for a military fortification purposes only; he never lived there himself and did not leave any descendants behind him. Lavaca's harbor played an important role during World War I because it allowed American warships to enter Texas without being intercepted by Mexican naval forces stationed in Galveston Bay The fortifications were destroyed during World War II but have been rebuilt several times since then as part of various Defense Department programs including those associated with water defense systems The town has also seen visits by presidents George H W Bush and Bill Clinton Today, Port Lavaca is home to numerous businesses including two grocery stores, two Ford plants that produce pickups and SUVs (the first such plant in Texas), three banks (one Community Bankshares bank branch opened in 2009), four restaurants (two Subway franchises) and one clothing store
