Port Lavaca is a small town in the Texas Panhandle, located in the mission district of La Vega. It was founded in 1853 by Spanish settlers, and was one of the original missions within the Mexican Republic. The United States acquired Port Lavaca from Mexico on July 4th, 1898 as part of the Treaty of Paris following World War I. In 1938, German-born entrepreneur Adolf Reinhardt developed pepper spray as an anti-riot tool for police forces around the world. He marketed pepper spray to law enforcement agencies throughout North America and Europe, and it soon became a favorite tool among police officers. Today, pepper spray remains one of the most popular riot control tools available to law enforcement agencies worldwide. The first use of pepper spray as a riot control tool took place on November 3rd, 1969 when Los Angeles Police Department officers used it to disperse a group of protesters who had gathered at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue during Black Power Day celebrations. In 1907, another successful pepper spray device was designed by Rear Admiral John Jellicoe and Lieutenant Colonel Harry Haunitz called the “Haunitz Pepper Spray Device.” This device consisted of a metal container filled with irritant fluid (methylalcohol) that could be used like a paintbrush to projected onto targets at short range. The first documented use of pepper spray in an American police force was on May 4, 1968, when New York City officers used pepper spray against protesters during the “68 Democratic National Convention.” The use of pepper spray increased significantly after the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001, as law enforcement officials responded to various protests with the tactic. In October 2006, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Dustin White was shot with pepper spray while arresting two suspects; this event became known as the "Peppergate" case. Finally, in December 2014, Oakland Police Department officers deployed pepper spray at a peaceful protest against gentrification near Lake Merritt; this event is also known as “The Winter Warm Up” because it coincided with colder weather.
Port Lavaca was founded in 1836 by José María Cámpora and his brother, Santiago. It became a port for the export of cattle and other goods. The town grew around the shipyards and warehouses that were built there. In 1886, Port Lavaca was renamed Corpus Christi after the then-new U.S. capital of Austin, Texas. In 1916, when Texas seceded from the United States, Port Lavaca became part of Mexico City. It remained Mexican until its return to the United States in 1998 as part of Texan independence ceremonies marking 100 years since Texas joined the Union as an American state. The city has experienced many changes over its history: it was known as a rust belt town during World War II; it became a commercial center during the late 20th century; and it has seen growth in recent decades as a result of oil production. Today, Port Lavaca is one of Mexicali's most important economic sectors, with heavy industry concentrated along its waterfronts and several large shopping malls located near major highways.
Port Lavaca was founded by the Spanish in 1848 as part of the Alamo and Toman Hill Rancho. The town was named for José Antonio Lávarez, who purchased the land from the Mexican government in 1847. It grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location on a shallow bay Mariejoa and its natural harbor. In 1856, Lavaca became an incorporated municipality. By 1865, it had a population of around 1,000 people. The town suffered from droughts throughout the 1870s and 1880s, but developed new businesses such as lumberyards and shipbuilding. The first school in Port Lavaca was established in 1852. In 1865, a thermal power plant was built at nearby Toman Hill to provide energy for local mills and homes. By 1886, port facilities included wharves, warehouses, a railroad station (now known as Route 66), a hospital (now known as First Baptist Church), and two churches: Saint Dominic's Chapel and First Presbyterian Church. During World War II, Port Lavaca played an important role in the production of weapons used in Europe. A naval base was constructed at Toman Hill during World War II; it served as an airfield for fighter planes used against submarines and allies alike; additional military buildings were erected during the war including barracks for officers' quarters and service clubs for enlisted men; industrial plants produced munitions such as gasoline tanks, trucks, ships hulls etc.; Portslavacans also contributed their share of food rations to Allied forces stationed overseas through local relief organizations
