Port Lavaca, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The area now occupied by Port Lavaca was first settled by Texans who came from Louisiana in 1836. The first post office was established in 1857 and the community name came from Spanish for "the bayou that flows into lake Lavaca." The original town site extended to what is now the downtown core of Port Lavaca. From its earliest days, settlement here included sugarcane plantations and other agricultural production; however, it also attracted people drawn to its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Today's businesses include several banks and a few thousand residents who work in local government, manufacturing, service industry and education sectors. The history of this small town began with the construction of theTexas Central Railroad through Hudspeth County in 1868-70. This line linked Houston with Dallas and points east over Buffalo Bayou before terminating at Fort Worth on the Red River Valley Railroad. At that time portage crossings were necessary because boat traffic crossed Buffalo Bayou at three points: two near present-day Port Lavaca Boulevard and one across Slaughter Lake (now Lake Slaughter). Settlement around today's downtown core began soon after railroad completion; as early pioneers walked or rode their horses to various stores or factories located near their homes, they left behind examples of English cottage architecture found throughout North Texas – such as Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church located on Fourth Street between State Avenue and Elm Street (now East Elm Street). In 1871 some citizens petitioned for incorporation as a village under the name "Port Lavalette". A year later another petition resulted in incorporation as a city under that name; however due to lack of support local officials changed the city's charter to allow only agriculture until 1890 when industrialization produced great demand for goods grown elsewhere - leading to increased development around downtown including an opera house/theater complex built on what are now First Avenue South (later Harrison Ave.), many bars/restaurants/clubs along First Avenue Southwest (later Congress Ave.), new shopping malls built south of I-10 just south of Interstate 35W (now Loop 1604), riverfront redevelopment including reclamation of much land north of Sabine Creek which forms part of Fort Worth City Limits - plus numerous housing developments inland within present day Hwy 128 & US 61 borders

On November 11, 1836, Fort Griffin was founded by the United States in what is now Port Lavaca, Texas. The fort served as a military outpost for the Mexican War and later during the American Civil War. The town of Port Lavaca developed around the fort and came to be known as one of the most important ports on the Texas Coast. In 1847, Mexico ceded sovereignty over Texas to America following their own Mexican-American War. As part of this treaty, Austin became an American city and Houston took over its role as capital. In 1849, President James K. Polk issued a proclamation ordering all US citizens in Mexico to leave within 72 hours or face martial law. This edict caused many Texans to flee the country and create new settlements in present-dayPort Lavaca and other areas along the Texas Coast. The post office at Fort Griffin was first established on October 3, 1848, but it did not open until December 1st due to lack of mail transportation from Austin. The first shipment of goods arrived at Fort Griffin from San Antonio on November 8th. At that time there were only 10 residents living in Fort Griffin proper while 350 people lived scattered throughout surrounding townships and village sites including La Junta de la Bahía (Junta Bay), Plaza de Armas (Armory Square), Colonia del Río Grande (Rio Grande Colony), Garza Adobe (Garza Adobe Settlement), El Rancho San Antonio (San Antonio Ranch), San Marcos Land Grant Estate(El Presidio de San Marcos) and Rancho Doña Ana(Doña Ana ranch).
