Port Lavaca, Texas is a town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The Port Lavaca Railroad Depot was built in 1881 and served as a stop on the Cimarron and Rio Grande Railway before it merged with the Texas Central Railway in 1912 to become the Texas Central Railway (TCR). In 1916, TCR became the Union Pacific Railroad when they merged with UP. In 1955, TCR was sold to Gulf Coast Line Corporation and its tracks were leased to US Steel for rail traffic until 1984 when US Steel retired from railroad ownership. On July 1, 1984, Gulf Coast Line Corporation merged into Penn Central Railroad which in turn became Conrail. The Port Lavaca Railroad Museum has been open since 1978. Today there are several local businesses that provide goods and services such as restaurants and small stores dotting the downtown area while an Amtrak station provides transportation for locals and tourists alike to access Austin or Dallas throughout much of the year. Port Lavaca is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Houston metropolitan area. The town was founded by James Hogg in 1849 as a trading post on the Brazos River. In 1861, it became the capital of Medina County and was named for General Sam Houston. The first store in Port Lavaca opened in 1872. A post office was established here in 1875 and remained operational until 1907. In 1925, a group of businessmen formed the Port Lavaca Community Improvement Association to improve conditions in the town and create jobs for the local community members. This association remains active to this day and has funded several projects such as an high school, new roads, and a library addition. In 1954, Port Lavaca acquired its own ZIP code after being annexed by San Antonio; it still uses that code today. In 1970, Port Lavaca High School moved from its original location on Wilson Drive to its current site on Commerce Street; that same year also marked the start of construction on what would become one of San Antonio's most popular tourist attractions: The Alamo Foundation Museum (now known as The Hemisfair Museum). Brought up during Reconstruction Era boom times when port facilities were built along I-35W near Victoria Park - now downtownSan Antonio - early residents called their new community "the Pines". By 1890 Utopia had grown large enough around wharves where ships unloaded cargoes at night then reloaded them with goods for export during days when steamships could only travel 12 nautical miles off shore due to safety concerns about open water crossings

The town of Port Lavaca, Texas was founded in 1879 by General James W. Fannin and his men who were retreating from Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel John L. Lavaca, a military officer who had fought with Fannin in the war. The first store in Port Lavaca was built on the corner of Elm and Houston Streets. In 1887, a post office was established in the town and remained in operation until it closed in 1912. The first school in Port Lavaca was opened in 1892 and remains open to this day as the only school in town. In 1893, two brothers, Harry and Edwin Haggerty, started a grocery store on Elm Street that became one of the most successful businesses around at that time. The Haggerty Brothers ran their store until they sold it to A.C. Gorman in 1907. Gorman continued to run the business until he died in 1968. In 1911, the Gulf Bayou Railway Company began service through Port Lavaca between Dallas and Corpus Christi along what is now known as the Gulf Coast Line Railroad Company line which connected Galveston with New Orleans via Bexar County (latertx). On September 16th of that year, General John J Grant arrived at Fort Sam Houston Depot located just outside of Port Lavaca for his ill-fated attempt to cross Mexico into South Texas via Borrego Pass without proper authorization from Emperor Maximilian II of Mexico City which would have resulted in Grant being captured and executed if discovered crossing into Mexican territory uninvited by his predecessor Agustín effectiveness demonstrated Grant's challenge required an army force under general command capable of marching 500 miles nonstop across hostile country while under enemy fire against an estimated 1 million Mexican troops positioned along both banks Of The Rio Grande River
