The town was founded by Texans who immigrated from Mexico in 1839. In 1851, it became part of the Republic of Texas and was named for General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The first school in Port Lavaca opened in 1853; it was renamed West High School in 1951. In 1865, Port Lavaca became a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad's railway line between San Antonio and El Paso. The railroad abandoned the line in 1970 and all of its tracks were removed years later leaving only a few foundations to remain as evidence of what once happened here. In 1971, two students at North Texas State University (NTSU) found fossils along with other remains near where US 281 crosses IH 35W just east of town limits. A study by Drs. Jerald Crenshaw and Donnie Wahlstrom determined that these are probably the remains of an ancient port located adjacent to present-day Port Lavaca which would have served as an important trade center for local farmers and fishermen during this time period

Port Lavaca, Texas is a town located in Wilson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wilson County. The first european settlement in what is now Port Lavaca was made by Spanish colonists in 1810. They named it San Antonio de Bexar after the presbyterian missionary St. Anthony of Padua who had been sent to evangelize the area. In 1834, General Sam Houston founded and ran the Republic of Texas here with help from American merchants and investors and homesteaders from New England and other parts of America. By 1840, about 1,000 people lived in Port Lavaca and its environs as part of Houston's Republic government as well as American traders who operated out of San Antonio de Bexar. In 1845-46 Mexican forces invaded Texas under General Texan Santa Anna and drove away most American settlers northward into present day Oklahoma Territory while also burning down many buildings in what is now Port Lavaca (including one built by local resident John Atherton). Most Texans responded by forming a militia to drive out Mexican forces that had taken up residence hereabouts; this force eventually drove Santa Anna out of TX in December 1846 along with all his troops retreating across US-Mexico boundary into Mexico proper where they were ultimately captured and executed.(1) Mexican forces returned to TX for another attack on Austin on November 3rd & 4th 1848 which resulted in the Battle of Fort Bend River; however because most Texans had evacuated or fled before then this battle did not result in significant damage or loss on either side.(2) This event marked only the second time a US military engagement had occurred within present day TX borders since independence days; prior to that both NativeAmerican skirmishes near Refugio Pass (now Nacogdoches) & El Paso involving various Creek tribes have resulted in no reported casualties.(3) Following this battle an effort was made by Americans including James Kenedy to purchase Rancho Lomas de Encinas from Mexico for $2 million dollars(4) resulting in today's town name - Kenedy Rancho - although actually Lots 6 through 8 actually lie within Marathon County, TX adjacent to Marathon Plantation.) This rancho stretch lay along Uvalde River Valley extending from FM 635 eastward pastpresent-day downtown Lubbock until it crossed Uvalde River just south of present day Deming Street Bridge about 12 miles southeast of Lubbock(5)(6). Port Lavaca is located in Hidalgo County, Texas, and it is the only city in the county. The city was founded on September 11, 1836 by Stephen F. Austin as a port of entry for goods arriving from Mexico. In 1840, the United States built a fort at the mouth of the Lavaca River to protect against Mexican aggression. The fort was abandoned in 1846 and Lavaca became an agricultural center. The first post office was established in Lavaca in 1857.
