Shipbuilding began here in 1915; during World War II Ports Lavaca became one of the most important commercial centers on Texas Beach because its deepwater berth allowed large Allied ships to enter Texarkana without fear of collision with other vessels or Coast Guard vessels trying to stop them. By 1961, however, when Interstate 45 supplanted railroads as the dominant transportation artery through Cameron County, Ports Lavaca's importance diminished somewhat And today it remains an agricultural center with small businesses serving primarily rural customers
