Port Arthur was founded in 1879 by James H. Bailey and his wife, Elizabeth. The town served as a transportation center for the surrounding area until it closed its doors in 1935. However, the city's history goes back much further than that. In 1827, General Sam Houston purchased land at what is now Port Arthur and built a fortification to defend the town against Native Americans. After years of construction, the fortifications were abandoned in 1835 and the fortification itself was sold to Dr. John Brown in 1840. Brown used it as a prison until he died in 1849. The fortifications remained unoccupied for many years after that, until they were sold to Captain Lyle Dormer in 1861. With their purchase of the fortifications, Captain Dormer also acquired title to approximately 200 acres (0 km2) of land within present-day Port Arthur limits. In 1865, Captain Dormer donated five acres (20 ha) of land east of today's downtown to establish what would become Stonington Elementary School District #2A. This donation provides fertile ground for future school development because it lies on top of an ancient burial mound dating back to 6500 BC which is affectionately known as "the Pockmarked Stone". Today, Stonington Elementary School District #2A occupies part of this site and continues to operate out ofCaptain Dormer's home on Fairchild Road while another part is currently being used as parking lot for local businesses located on South Main Street between North Avenue and East Avenue near Children’s Hospital

When the United States purchased Texas from Mexico in 1836, Port Arthur was one of the first communities to be established. The town was founded on the current site of Austin, Texas in 1839 by American soldiers as a trading post between Fort Sam Houston and Mexican forces. By 1840, the town had developed into a small cotton-growing community with around 100 residents. In 1846, US forces were sent to suppress an uprising in Texas led by General Santa Anna. After months of fighting, Santa Anna's army was surrounded and surrendered at San Antonio. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded Texas to America for $6 million. In return for this acquisition, Americans agreed to protect Mexicans living in Texas against attacks by hostile Indians. The town continued to grow and develop until it reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of over 10,000 people. However, after the war ended, Port Arthur declined rapidly and only managed to maintain a few hundred residents throughout the remainder of the 20th century. Today, Port Arthur is home to a handful of abandoned buildings and businesses that remain largely unchanged from their early days.

Port Arthur was founded in 1836 by Captain John F. Caddo as a small trading post on the Brazos River. In 1854, it became the capital of Texas and was later renamed Austin. It was here that General Sam Houston met with Santa Anna to negotiate the Treaty of San Jacinto in 1858, which ended the Mexican-American War.
