The Port Arthur Museum of History and Art (PAMHA) is a museum located in the town of Port Arthur, Texas, United States. The museum has exhibits on the history of scopes from before their inception to the present day. In addition, PAMHA offers educational programs about optics and microscope usage, as well as acting as a resource center for dealers and collectors of optical instruments. The first mention of a telescope in Port Arthuret is from 1837 when Samuel Morse sent an instrument to astronomy professor Dr. James Challis that included a reflector telescope and some astronomical materials. Morse's instrument was used by him to observe Venus through his homemade telescope in 1839. It was not until 1862 when the American Astronomical Society received an observatory at Fort Worth and began providing telescopes for scientific purposes within the city limits with funding provided by General Sam Houston. In 1865, Amos Stowell built what is considered one of the earliest scopes when he erected what is now called "Stowell's Telescope" on property near today's downtown Port Arthuret. The Observatory became operational in 1868 with assistance from amateur astronomers who pooled money collected from ticket sales for astronomer lectures given at various locations around town during that year- including Mrs. Julia Lackey's home which stands still today across Main Street from PAMHA headquarters (now part of Chisholm Hall). With advances in technology over time, new types of telescopes were constructed such as Stowell's Multi-coated Reflector Telescope which was built in 1935; it could resolve images up to 100x whereas earlier Scopes only could resolve images up to 25x at best! Pamha also houses several items related to goggles used by astronomers during this era including two Gossamer Flexible Ocular Glasses dating back to 1892 while specimens depicting different aspects of optical Instruments are on display examples include: A Besselian reflecting prism invented in 1775 which served as an eyepiece for John Herschel’s “Herschelsonian” telescope operated between 1800–1802; A Cooke refractor designed by Edwin Hubble using three Merit novae stars visible together through a single lens – one faint enough only For amateurs To See – discovered on March 14th 1938; A Celestron StarGazer II astrograph/telescope model C8 purchased secondhand from Bob & Wendy Howells during their visit to PAMHA on October 8th 2006 .

Port Arthur is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bastrop County. The town was founded by European settlers in 1836 and named after Arthur Ashe, an Irishman who had come to Texas as a cattle trader. The first post office was established in Port Arthur on December 3, 1836. In 1840, the Mexican government granted ownership of the town to John Hogg and his brother-in-law William Clements Caldwell for their service in suppressing the Texan Revolution. Afterward, Fort Hogg became part of the Mexican garrison at San Antonio and no longer served as a checkpoint for travelers between Texas and Mexico. In 1845, Captain David Starr Jordan's 2nd Regiment United States Infantry arrived at Port Arthur from New Orleans with orders to suppress pro-Mexican resistance near Austin. After skirmishes with local Native American tribes on January 8 and 9, 1845, Captain Jordan's unit retreated northeast across Brazos River into what is now Bastrop County. By February 11th only about 100 men remained at Fort Hogg; all others had been killed or captured by Indians or departing Mexicans during that abortive attempt to retake Austin from Texans led by Sam Houston. Johnsonville was founded nearby on a bend in Brazos River which served as an important transportation link between Fort Bend Co., Galveston Bayou region east of Port Arthur (now Houston) and Cypress Creek Valley interior areas located primarily around Beaumont/Port Arthur area north of IH 10W (now US 281). Johnsonville prospered until it lost its water power source c1880 when new dams were built along Colorado River causing most development within Johnsonville area to cease abruptly
