Port Arthur is a town in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,358 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and is located on the Gulf of Mexico near Mesquite. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had helped tofound Texas in 1845. The first post office was established in 1847 and became known as Port Arthur. The name change reflected the fact that it lay on the Mexican boundary between Texas and Mexico at that time. In 1888, a wharf was built to store goods coming into Galveston Bay from Cuba and other parts of Latin America; this wharf remains today as one of the few remaining examples of early American waterfront development in Galveston Harbor area. In 1903, a water tower was completed to provide water for local farmers and businesses; an electric light system arrived in 1907. By 1915, all but two blocks within downtown were built up with single-family homes or small apartments (the exception being an acreage inside what is now Browning Elementary School). The oilfield boom hit Port Arthur hard during World War II because so many men were needed to work on production plants offshore; however, most residents stayed behind when petroleum exploration began upriver in later years. The community experienced some modest economic growth following World War II until surpassed by more developed areas adjacent to it during the Korean War era when manufacturing jobs moved away from Port Arthur due to Korean war munitions production and increased military activity there overall throughout Southwestern Texas
