The Port Arthur Massacre took place on October 14, 1876, when a group of gunmen, led by Charles Whitman, killed more than fifty people at the town of Port Arthur, Texas. The massacre was one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history. The shooting began around 7:00 PM CST when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of people near the old courthouse in town. Three hours later, twenty-one people were dead and over fifty were wounded. One gunman became known as "the Shooter" and is considered the most deadly shooter in American history. Charles Whitman was arrested after the massacre but never charged with any crime because he had no motive. He died from natural causes in 1966 at the age of 73 years old.

In 1840, Houston ordered General James Kenedy to move his headquarters from Austin downriver towards present day Corpus Christi so that he could better monitor Mexican activities upstream along Lake Texoma (now Angelina Bay). At first, Kenedy complied but soon realized that he lacked authority over much of East Texas beyond Huntsville; therefore he asked Houston for help getting control over this area specifically. On July 6th 1840, under orders from Houston, Kenedy landed his troops at Brazoria Pass near present day Port Arthur after days marches across hostile country full Of knife fights and Apache attacks; it was only then that both men realized they had crossed into Mexico Territory! Following their arrival at Brazoria Pass, Texans were able to build Fort Clark which served as their primary military base throughout much of East Texas prior to annexation by Mexico in 1846 whenTexas became part of America following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). As American forces moved into East Texas during Reconstruction following slavery's abolition in 1865, Fort Clark saw limited use but resumed operations shortly thereafter when federal troops returned home following Appomattox Court Martial concluding Confederate victory over Union soldiers at successive battles including Manassas Creek (November 9th 1863), Bull Run Bridge( April 14th 1865) and Wilson’s Raid(October 15th 1865). When America entered World War II via Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 – just months after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor – USS Galvestonhire Naval Base was activated along with facilities adjacent USS Wichita stationed off Louisiana coast) making US naval activity available off TX coast through out summer while Japanese submarines hunted US shipping North Atlantic convoy transporting foodstuffs essential for Allied war effort; strategic bomber missions using B-29 Superfortresses were also conducted during This time period!
