In the early 1800s, Port Arthur was a thriving community with a population of around 5,000. The town was located on the mouth of the Brazos River and was known for its excellent fishing and shipbuilding industries. However, by 1871, Port Arthur had become an isolated backwater due to its location on a secluded stretch of coastline surrounded by mountains. This isolation has led to the town’s nickname “The Ghost Town”. Despite this backdrop, Port Arthur continued to thrive through the years until it was destroyed in a fire in 1915. The fire destroyed most of the town, including its churches and school buildings. The only remaining building from before the fire is an old warehouse that still serves as a local grocery store today. Although there are no evidence that shooters ear plugs were ever used inPortArthur during this time period, their history does exist thanks to reports from locals who recalled hearing shots fired in the area back then. One report even mentions that shooters “threw grenades into windows as they fled” in order to draw attention away from their targets. Woodbury's term ended when he died suddenly two years later; returnees from Mexico took over government until an election could be held. On December 4, 1835, General Sam Houston announced that he had chosen Lieutenant Colonel David Fannin to succeed him as governor due to lack of a suitable candidate; Fannin accepted and served until March 3, 1837 when he resigned due to ill health. On July 6, 1840 federal troops under General Worth invaded Texas led by Daniel Webster while Governor Fannin proclaimed martial law and ordered all male citizens between age 10 and 30 not leave their homes without a specific order from him or a military officer; this order has been cited as one of the reasons why Fort Worth became more important than Port Arthur during Texan Civil War times.. In 1840–1841[when?] three smallpox outbreaks killed many people near anchorages on Brazos River mouth: those living around present day downtown reported 361 cases out of 511 cases diagnosed among Quito residents living along riverbanks within five days after landfall plus another 362 cases diagnosed among Indians living upstream about 30 miles inland... nearly half (269/8)ofall Borden’s Creek communities west of town were wiped out from smallpox before Smallpox vaccine became available outside United States... As early as 1824 [Quito], some Upper Louisiana French travelers noted large numbers (>50%) noncombatants among Pecos [native] tribe members east side Rio Grande de la Costa... After landfall many Quito & Borden’s Creek inhabitants dispersed into surrounding Spanish settlements where they continued contact with local peoples until European diseases eliminated most Native Americans west of Pecos River including all but perhaps 2/3rds(≥75%) indigenous pre-Columbian Binocular People inhabiting region adjacent coast sometime before AD 1520... Some prior knowledge about smallpox may have reached coastal societies near Rio Grande de la Costa through indigenous traders active at same time along coastvillegreguiana… By 1830 Hitchiti villages located ∼25 miles SW FM 1960 southerly edge Rio Grande de la Costa report seven caseouts per month during summer months compare to six monthly caseouts reported yr earlier by Navajoes living nearest shoreline… This suggests long range trade Relations between Hitchiti Village vicinity FM 1960 & coastal Navajoe villages occurred even before onset OF smallpox epidemic which probably triggered by landed intrastate disease delivery via mail route from fortifications on point guardiano Island
