In 1881, Port Arthur was founded as a cattle ranch by James H. Webb. The town was named after the Battle of Port Arthur, which occurred in 1875 between the United States and Mexico. In 1907, the original electric light plant was built in PortArthur and began operations. On October 16, 1914, World War I began and on November 1, Oklahoma became a state. On December 3rd of that year, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the National Defense Act of 1916 which created the United States Army's First Cavalry Division at Fort Worth. That same year, Port Arthur merchant George Waddington donated land to build what would become Myrtles Prairie School District #5; that school is now known as Mount Carmel High School.
Port Arthur, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is located on the Gulf Coast of the country. The population was 9,425 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and is bordered by Denton to the north, Midland to the east, and Williamson County to the south. The first recorded settlement in what is now Port Arthur was made by Spanish traders in 1736 as San Antonio de Bexar de la Vera Cruz. At its peak it had a population of around 100 people, but fell victim to Mexico's War for Independence in 1847 and quickly contracted out its affairs to other Mexican settlements nearby such as Victoria and Comalco. In 1859, however, when Texas became a U.S. Territory, Fort Travis (later renamed Fort Worth) was built at what is now PortArthur in order to house American soldiers stationed there during local hostilities against Mexico which were then ongoing; after months of construction work this fort became operational on April 14th 1860 under commanding general William Hance with 1st Battalion United States Volunteers under Major General James Mckenzie garrisoning it; 3rd Battalion Texas Rangers also served as an alacrity detachment providing night security until February 1861 when they were withdrawn due to political unrest throughout most of America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation In 1865 shipwrecked Confederate sailors from CSS "Alabama" came ashore near present day Port Arthur and began building their own lighthouse just beyond Kenedy Bay which remains one of downtown Port Arthur's most popular tourist attractions today This initial lighthouse would eventually be replaced by two more - one called The Old Lady (1892) which still stands today across from City Hall while The New Lady (1901) burned down in 1922 shortly before becoming part ofñ Municipal Building complex that currently contains City Hall itself Shipwrecks again struck port Arthur waters during World War II resulting in USS "Arkansas" being sunk off shore on July 2nd 1944 with over 1000 troops onboard including many Texan combat veterans who landed ashore on shore using inflated rubber dinghies nicknamed “Doolittle divers” due to their Commander General John J Pershing’s promotion for his successful Operation Neptune’s Spear campaign against Japan ) Today only three items remain from this sinking including a US Navy ensign flying from her masthead identifying her as SS "Arkansas"
