Port Arthur is a city located in the US state of Texas. The population was 95,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1871 by General Zachariah Houston and his army as a stop on their march across Texas to New Mexico. In 1901, Port Arthur became a terminus for the Texas Railroad Commission's Butterfield Overland Mail service. In 1907, Houston designated it as the county seat of Nueces County and made it an incorporated municipality with its own government. As cotton planting increased in Port Arthur during World War I and II, demand for cotton goods led to growth in businesses such as restaurants, hotels and stores along First Street between downtown and Commerce Boulevard. The economy has changed significantly since then however, with heavy reliance upon manufacturing since 2000s which has resulted in high levels of pollution from industries including aluminum smelters and paper mills near downtown (the latter responsible for much of the unhealthy air quality within town). However recent investments by Mayor Steve Adler have helped improve conditions around downtown while also creating new jobs in both professional services (such as law enforcement) and technology companies. Overall, Port Arthur has been successful over many years at adapting to economic changes while maintaining its cultural attractions which include arts & music events throughout the year as well as traditional rodeo events that occur every September

Port Arthur is a town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The land that now PortArthur was first settled by families from eastern Kentucky in 1845. By 1876, the residents of Port Arthur had organized themselves into a town corporation and built their first schoolhouse. In 1893, they voted to name the town after General Zachary Taylor because of his role in helping to drive Mexican forces out of Texas during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, a railroad was built through Port Arthur and began serving it as a commercial center for farmers and settlers in central Vernon County. The growth of this industry led to the development of many small businesses within Port Arthur itself as well as outside settlements such as San Marcos and Fredericksburg. During World War II, Fort Worth businessman George Wickenheiser donated land near present-day downtown Port Arthur for use as an airfield for American bombers attacking Japanese targets in Korea. This fueled economic growth throughout downtown Port Arthur until 1969 when FM 2100 (now TX 290) was completed bypassing downtown and routing traffic through nearby Williamson Ranch on its way to US 183 southbound. After years of debate over what should be done with the former military base property, it was decided that most likely only housing would be developed onsite while some other uses could still be considered if deemed necessary by local officials or developers living within walking distance of Fort Worth’sowntown district (such as North Park Boulevard). In 1992, following recommendations from then-Mayor Dick Hedges and City Manager Donny Gooch Jr., city planners recommended demolishing all buildings on site except for two single-family homes which would serve as community centers for new residents arriving after 1991 when FM 2100 became an interstate highway system bypassing downtown; these plans were never enacted though there have been occasional sightings of large chunks missing offsite from various neighborhoods bordering Fort Worth'swest side since then! Port Arthur is located in the Stephens County, Texas, region of the United States. The community was founded on November 10, 1836 by Captain John Hogg and his family. It was named for General James M. Austin's command post at Fort Sam Houston on the banks of the Navarro River. The first store in town was built by Hogg and his son-in-law, J.B. Clements, on Main Street in 1838. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s as thousands of Texans seeking to escape slavery set up camp near its shores. By 1860, Port Arthur had a population of over 5,000 people and was home to a number of stores, schools, churches and hotels. However, it would only become an important commercial center after Texas joined the United States in 1861 and became an American territory. After Confederate forces captured Houston in April 1865, Port Arthur fell under Union control until February 1866 when it reverted back to Confederate rule pending ratification of a new state constitution that granted voting rights to African Americans. The town experienced heavy bombardment from Union troops during the Battle of Perryville on July 3–4, 1870; however no damage occurred to buildings or citizens due to lack of military engagement at that time In 1881,[2] Port Arthur changed its name to Texarkana because local cattle ranchers had trademarked that term for their products (Texarkana being pronounced "tee-ark-a-nuh"). In 1902 Texarkana became an independent city with a population exceeding 100,000 people
