The town became an important port for shipping products along the Gulf Coast during World War II because of its location at the mouth of Buffalo Bayou. The port also handled large numbers of refugees during that time. In 1951, Fort Worth annexing Leon County made PortArthur an independent municipality; however, it reverted back to its original status as a part of Fort Worth upon annexation by Dallas-Fort Worth in 1975. Growth has again been slow due to lack of investment although there are plans to add tens of thousands more jobs over the next few decades with help from private companies and government initiatives like Austin's "Forward Act". The booming economy has caused prices for housing to increase significantly while job opportunities have not kept up with demand; however this should change soon as both employers and workers are looking for innovative solutions which can improve productivity growth rates within industries across many sectors including technology (Texas Instruments), health care ( clinics run by Kaiser Permanente) education ( Jessup Community College) & retail services (Walmart).
