The town began growing rapidly during Reconstruction Period as many workers were needed on local farms following reconstruction efforts which had a significant impact on economic development throughout much of East Texas including PortArthur. Many notable people were born or raised in or around Port Arthur including Sam Houston who served as President pro tempore United States Congress 1907–1909; John A. Logan who served as Governor of Texas 1937–1945; Ike Eisenhower who served as President World War II 1940–1945; and Forrest Gump who was born October 12th, 1922 in nearby Fort Worth Creekelle parish just north of present day downtown PortArthur. During World War II especially there suffered extensive damage from bombing raids by Japanese bombers which did extensive damage both inside and outside town limits with only limited rebuilding taking place because most residents had fled prior to fall 1945 except for a few men who managed to stay behind to rebuild their homes using salvaged materials provided by Japanese occupation troops retreating through North Texas back into Japan proper after their defeat at Midway Island on September 2nd 1945 accompaning American forces invading northern Japan; these men are commonly referred to as "the last Japs." The post-war period saw rapid growth both within town limits itself (+50% between 1950 & 1960) attributable largely to new housing developments completed during an era when towns often experienced high levels Of population density coupled with various industrial concerns such as Petrochemical Plant 1 located adjacent to then existingowntown properties now used mostly for office space featuring several large glass buildings rising above busy streetscape punctuated by lowrise apartment complexes built subsequent thereto amongst other commercial developments particularly concentrated along main street running perpendicular thereto serving principally light industrial users although some heavy industry has also been located within downtown boundaries since then limiting retail activity somewhat albeit slightly increasing overall development rate over time despite slow initial growth spurt largely attributable primarily again thereafter*to continuing outflow/inflowof resident tax base resulting chiefly from steady influx/outflowof jobs converting traditional agricultural pursuits into more modern forms reflecting increasingly secularized society with attendant increase in overnight stays rather than permanent settler presence*) including those related aspects increasingly associated with recent reestablishment or redevelopment thereof viz: increased Hispanic Nativity rates making port Arthur a unique community among major communities similar therein experiencing sizable percentage increases relative thereto since 1990s notwithstanding ongoing gentrification trends*albeit still relatively modest given prevailing demographic conditions).
