In 1857, George Waco sent his brother James Waco to lead an expedition into Angelina County to purchase land from Native Americans known as Mission Indians for $1 per acre (about US$ ). James Waco returned with goods worth over $100 dollars and convinced other Texans to join him in helping buy more land from these Indian buyers. The resulting townsite were known as Waco City after James Waco's hometown in Scotland where he had grown up before landing in America in 1795 as part of Captain John Smith's exploratory party looking for new routes through Central Americaroute possible via Mexico instead of following Spain's route through Nicaraguaand Honduras To reach Asia this way turned out not to be viable so they continued their journey downriver until they reached San Pedro de las Flores on July 16th 1799.) Port Arthur was founded in 1836 by the Texas Rangers as a trading post on the Red River. It became a railroad town in the 1870s, and became an important center for cotton production in the early 1900s. The city was destroyed by an air raid during World War II, but it was rebuilt and renamed after Houston in 1951. In 1997, Port Arthur was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
