In 1876, the first gun laser was invented in Port Arthur, Texas by John A. Dye and Samuel Morse. The device used a small mercury or cadmium light bulb to project a pinpointed image onto an object. It was not very effective and it remained primarily a military tool until the early 1920s. The technology behind gun lasers evolved over time and in 1934, Walther developed and marketed the world’s first true gun laser with a wavelength of 685 nm. At that time, Gun Laser Corporation was one of the leading manufacturers of such devices. However,Walther ultimately discontinued production of its own gun lasers in 1949 due to technological advances which made them much more efficient and practical. The disadvantage is that long-wavelength lasers need more time to fire than shorter-wavelength gunsights, which may lead to them being less effective at hitting smaller prey within their target range (i.e., outside the range where they would reach with short wavelengthguns).

Port Arthur was founded in 1845 by General Sam Houston as the terminus of a wagon road connecting Texas with Mexico. The town grew rapidly, and in 1851 it became the capital of Texas. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, Port Arthur supported the Confederacy and was destroyed. The town continued to decline until it was replaced by Austin in 1965.
