Bullets in the history of Port Arthur, Texas date back to 1876. At that time, the town was named after Fort Worth, Texas and was part of the Wichita Mountains military district. On July 4th of that year, a group of men from Wichita Mountains met at a local restaurant to discuss their future plans. One man in attendance, John Haggerty, decided to start manufacturing small arms in Port Arthur and named his company The Fort Worth Rifle Company. In 1879, Haggerty moved his company to what is now downtown Port Arthur and began producing rifles for the United States Cavalry Regiment under license from Colt’s Manufacturing Company. In 1901, The Fort Worth Rifle Company merged with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and became known as Winchester Firearms Corporation. From 1903-1905, Winchester produced its own rifle designs which led to them becoming well-known within the firearms industry. In 1907-1908, Winchester produced their first pistol which they called “The White Boy”. This revolver became very popular and quickly replaced revolvers manufactured by other companies such as Colt’s Manufacturing Company. In 1916-1917, World War I interrupted production on Winchester firearms Corporation products and led to them ceasing production altogether; however this did not mean that they were no longer manufacturers of quality firearms; rather it just meant that they were no longer available for purchase by consumers outside of America; instead these products were only available through licensed dealers across America. However due to World War II gun control laws being put into place following World War I (and subsequent amendments), Winchester Firearms Corporation was able to reenter production once again under new name: Winchester Repeating Arms Incorporated (WRBI). WRBI continues current production throughout today with pistols leading up until calibers such as .30 caliber (the most common caliber used today), while rifles continue down through calibers such as 556mm NATO (.223 Remington).
