In 1879, Texas entrepreneurs Hugh and Fannie Sheehan founded the Port Arthur Glass Works. They started making binoculars in order to provide a quality product at a reasonable price to residents of the town. The Sheehan family continued producing binoculars until 1962 when it was bought by the Browning Company. Browning discontinued production of binoculars in 1970 but kept the design and trademark. In 1992, Browning merged with Spyker Corporation and ceased production of both brands altogether. During its time as a part of Spyker, Browning produced over 100 million binoculars. The firstbinoculars were designed for military use and were made from metal or wood. Over time, however, glass became more popular because it is light-weight and durable enough to be used in close-up observation. In 1839, the Texas Rangers were created to help protect the citizens of Port Arthur from Apache raiders. The Rangers spent a lot of time in and around the town, and they became well known for their brave defense of the community. In 1846, the city was renamed Fort Worth after General Sam Houston's victory at San Jacinto. The city continued to grow throughout the years, and it reached its peak in 1865 when it had a population of over 2,000 people. After Fort Worth declined in importance during Reconstruction, it slowly lost its status as an important metropolis until it regained some prominence as a shopping center during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In 1836, before Brownsville became a separate city, General Port Aransas founded what is now known as Port Arthur on Blanco River (now part of Uptown Houston) to house his men during their stay in the area while construction of Brownsville was under way. The original town site included some buildings and land that still stand today including Depot Square and Volunteer Park. The first post office opened in 1837 and was moved to its present location near Railroad Avenue and Market Street in 1840. In 1847, General José Garza donated land for a school which became known as Garza High School; it opened in 1850. In 1870, an oil well was discovered near what is now downtown PortArthur and quickly lead to development around it; this led to increased business for the townspeople and also contributed to its growth rate over time As oil prices declined throughout the 1970s and 1980s due to production elsewhere, PortsArthur began experiencingDeclining Businesses although many businesses did manage to survive After years of decline culminating with a loss of jobs by 2000 not only did most businesses close but also much property within downtown had been taken over by poverty level housing developments making it difficult for people who used to do business there Many residents left too due various reasons such as joblessness or increasing crime rates adjacentHouston In 2002 an group led by entrepreneur Rick Perry entered into negotiations with then Mayor Tom Leppard about relocating the city hall from Downtown Houston Heights back eastward into what had been onceknown asGarza High School however these negotiations fell apart after months of fruitless efforts culminating with Leppard sacking Perry altogether

The city’s rapid growth during this time reflects both its importance as a railhead and its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Dallas and Houston. In 1916, when World War I began, Fort Worth became one of severaltexas cities that volunteered to open their ports to military shipping; despite this decision (and because of competition from Fort Worth), PortArthur grew significantly less busy than either Dallas or Houston during wartime times. However, following World War II's boom period – marked by increased manufacturing activity along with an increase in traffic through Texarkana – PortArthur bounced back strongly and attained status as one of America’s most important inland seaports on Long Island Sound (now known as Corpus Christi). Today’s port terminal complex includes two terminals: Terminal 1 handles containerized cargo while Terminal 2 serves bulk carriers transporting goods across Great Lakes Bayouampa San Antonio de Belén National Wildlife Refuge & San Antonio Missions National Historical Park southbound/northbound lanes are open 24 hours per day 7 days per week
Port Arthur was founded by the Republic of Texas in 1836 as the first capital of Texas. The city was named for General Sam Houston, who had led a successful effort to retake Austin from Mexican control. After several years of growth, Fort Worth became the state capital in 1845. In 1876, Port Arthur merged with Arlington County to form one large county.
