The city is named after General Sam Houston, who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. The first white settlement in what is now Port Arthur was made by Capt. John Neely Bryan on November 8, 1836 as part of his effort to protect American settlers from Mexican forces advancing towards San Antonio. On December 12, 1836, Bryan and his men erected a small log cabin near present day downtown Port Arthur. A year later on January 7th of 1837 Captain John Neely Bryan set out from Fort Bend County with eighty compatriots to colonize what would become Port Arthur by land and build homes and businesses around what are today the busy CBD districts of downtown and North Shore Drive.. The first post office in town was established on February 14th of 1840 under the name “Bryan” with mail sent to Brownsville until October 1st that year when it became known as “PortArthur” for General Sam Houston who had just arrived from Mexico City with orders to retake Texas from Mexican control. In 1846 Port Arthur was renamed Austin after former President James Kenedy but reverted back to its original name within two years when Kenedy moved away due to ill health. The first store opened in town on May 20th of 1850 under the name “Hancock” which continued until 1865 when it became part of the newly formed Dallas-Fort Worth Railway Company and changed its name again to simply “Dallas” on July 1st that year becoming one of America’s most important railroad towns along with Wichita Falls and Waco (later Amarillo). During World War II portArthur grew rapidly as allied troops landed there for 1944 Allied invasion operation known as Operation Overlord which led directly to Nazi Germany surrendering all their European holdings including Austria & Czechoslovakia while also liberating Paris; this event also prompted German civilians inside France & Belgium fleeing into Holland where they were eventually rounded up & executed by Dutch Resistance movements helping lead to eventual reunion of those nations under one common currency called Euro zone following war's end In 1948 Dallas–Fort Worth annexed much smaller Alvarado County making it home to most Texans living east of Interstate 10 while annexing much larger Parker County making it home To most Texans living west of I-10 . On January 30th, 1959 Dallas–Fortworth merged into Austin – TX creating one large city across North Central Texas united by culture (Dallas Cowboys football players/ fans), history (Sam Houston), commerce ( Hundreds stores located throughout downtown), sports teams (Dallas Stars hockey team)

Port Arthur is a small town located in the southernmost corner of Texas, about 70 miles from Austin. It was founded by Enoch Pratt in 1836 as a stop on the Overland Mail route between Missouri and California. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location at the mouth of the Trinity River, its position near salt mines and oil wells, and its role as a shipping point for goods arriving from Mexico. In 1881, Port Arthur became the capital of Travis County after it was moved from Austin. By 1920, however, it had shrunk to less than 1,000 residents. Today, Port Arthur remains an important cultural and economic center within Texas. Its Historic District has been designated by the United States Department of Education as a National Historic Landmark; its downtown contains several historic buildings including the original courthouse and jail; and many local businesses continue to operate despite being affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Port Arthur was founded in 1836 by Captain James H. Polk as the first permanent Spanishtown located on the Texas Gulf coast. In 1841, when Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Texans to swear allegiance to the Mexican government or be deported, Commodore John C. Frémont sailed into Galveston Bay and anchored his ship at Fort Houston, which became known as "the bastion of freedom". The fort served as a base of operations for Frémont's attempt to open up Texas to American settlement. Santa Anna's order caused outrage among many Texans who saw it as an act of aggression against their country. In response, they formed a militia and began marching on Galveston for shelter. On July 6, 1841, about 1,000 Texan militiamen faced 5,000 federal troops led by Commodore John C. Frémont at the Battle of San Jacinto Bridge over the Texas Gulf Coast. After a bloody battle that lasted three hours, Texan forces emerged victorious and massacred more than 200 Mexican soldiers and civilians. The Mexicans were never able to rebuild their army in Galveston Bay and ultimately lost control of Texas. In 1865, General Robert Ewell took command of Confederate forces besieging East Austin in what is now Austin County after Union general Ulysses S Grant withdrew from Mexico City following his failed campaign against Confederate General Johnston in April 1865. Ewell ordered Major General James Bogue to march through central Austin with orders not only to quash any efforts by local militias loyal to Grant but also investigate any possible threats posed by newly arrived Anglo-Americans such as Sam Houston's friends Wharton & Hardin (Humble Oil Company). On October 15th Bogue discovered 10 men hidden inside buildings near the University of Texas at Austin while horseback riders searched for another group believed responsible for recent fires around town; this discovery raised alarms throughoutAustinville because there had been no reports of arson within city limits since late September 1865 On November 26th during lunchtime Baylor students staged a sit-in at Waco Hall demanding tuition hikes that would have funded new medical facilities campus wide; subsequent rioting ensued after several classes were cancelled due to lack of security
