On December 12th, 1865, Brigadier General James Hogg transferred command from Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry to MajorGeneral Charles McCulloch just prior to Perry's departure for Mexico City with his expedition against Mexico City Expeditionary Force commanded by McCulloch himself; this event marked an important change in Uvalde County history asMcCulloch became Commanding Officer instead of Captain John Smith who had served as interim CO during Perry's absence 1st Lt Hogg then took command ofFort Houston until relieved by Col Durant July 4th1866 while still occupying Fort Houston . Commodore Perry arrived back in US November 25th1867 having successfully completed his mission against Mexico with only 9 men dead including Hogg (the last American casualty during that campaign) . After Commodore Perry left we lost interest in fortifications & wharves but continued building masts for vessels coming into port ..... Only after World War II did we realize our mistake & remove all obstructions .... Today most people know about our history thru oral histories or books written about us
