In 1880, businessman George Waco bought land north of today's downtown for $1 million and built Waco Dam to provide water for his new townsite; Waco served as its own municipal government until 1915 when it merged with Round Rock municipality to form Austin Municipal Government (). In 1901, due westward expansion byzoners led by oilman John Maultsby caused three major fires: one at Burnet Dam; one at Mount Pleasant; and one at Westlake Park (now University Village). During World War II much unused military Demilitarized Zone land lay within or adjacent to downtown Travis County due to its strategic location between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez along I-35W (); this land became available for civilian use following hostilities ended in 1945 when Japan surrendered unconditionally☎ On November 2nd 1955 Mayor Floyd McKelvey announced plans for annexation by Travis County because then-County Commissioner Don Fry said he could not refuse annexation requests from cities such as El Paso and McAllen☎ On December 4th 1955 commissioners voted unanimously approve annexation❤ The official incorporation date was December 8th 1955🙂 By this time there were over 100 suburbs located within 1/4 mile✍️ Today more than 260 suburban communities are located within 1 mile
