Plano, Texas is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and the third-largest city in Texas. The population of Plano was 1,571,821 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Arlington-Ft Worth Combined Statistical Area. The area that would become Plano was settled by farmers in 1876 and named after one of their own, John P. Plano. In 1915, developers developed what would become Parkland Shopping Center on Elm Street near Lamar Boulevard - this became home to more than 100 stores before it closed in 2006 and was replaced by IHOP restaurant chain. The only remaining structure from that time is a two-story brick building at 6200 Research Drive which still functions as office space for American Eagle Outfitters store local branch office located on Elm Street & Tower Road which opened in 1984 within ParkLand mall complex (the old IHOP property). In the late 1990s development recommenced with new construction around University Malls shopping center (now Rossendale Mall) on Commerce Boulevard across from Interstate 30 conducted by Walnut Creek Companies Incorporated with assistance from Hunt Valley Resources Corporation (now Hunt Valley Properties). That project included the erection of a 350 foot tall sculpture known as "The Skyway" made entirely out of red glass panels similar to those used at Arlington County's Ballpark Express stadium including an observation deck overlooking Hirschsprung Parkway nearby. This operation cost $2 million and took five years to complete. After completion, University Malls had more than 150 specialty retailers including Sears Kenmore, JCPenney, Macy's and Urban Outfitters among others inside its four levels including an extensive food court featuring several restaurants such as Subway sandwich shop, Chick-fil-A Grill & Bar and PapaJohn's Pizza; plus over 50 music venues comprising several symphony orchestras Worcester Polytechnic Institute Symphony Orchestra(s), Houston Symphony Orchestra(s),Dallas Symphony Orchestra(s), Austin Repertory Theatre Company(s)among others through its multiple performance spaces totaling over 1 million square feet/ floor plan since opening; almost all prior to privatization by Arcel Land Development Company later renamed Townsquare mall management LLC following various rebranding schemes ultimately causing many stores satellite locations throughout suburban malls throughout southeast Texas under various names most notably Fairfield mall until eventually closure announced in March 2014 along with any other Arcel Land developments properties located outside Downtown Dallas effective January 2015 having been operated primarily by Operative Investments Ltd., wholly owned subsidiary thereof since December 2013 having purchased all assets formerly operated jointly by both entities previously being Butler Holdings Incorporated; major tenants include Sears Roebuck & Co., Old Navy Store #1, H&M Store #3 vacated during remodeling phase later becoming anchors for now defunct Dillard's department store operations relocatering from downtown Dallas concurrent with discontinuing operations at Sam's Club warehouse situated adjacent thereto also resulting in significant loss for latter company; pet retailer Petsmart relocating from downtown then shutting down location concurrent with Petco openning concurrently adjacent therefrom also resultin significant loss for latter company Plansonger Homes LLC has redeveloped much portions northeast side of town near Fort Worth International Airport into large mixed use projects called "Plano Post".
