In 1971 both UT Arlington/TXSouthwestern and UT Southwestern Medical Center merged to become UT Health Science Centerplex, one of the country’s largest healthcare systems with more than 40 campuses across six states. In 2000 UTC constructed what is now called “The Towers” complex adjacent to its main campus for use as a research center for various medical disciplines including biochemistry, neurology, psychiatry and veterinary medicine as well as health sciences education programs from other universities like Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine among others. In 2006, following decades of planning and construction work on what would eventually be home to over 60 buildings comprising 3 million square feet (270 thousand m2), educational institutions Drexel University (Philadelphia), La Salle University (Texas City), Rice University (Houston) were all welcomed by Mayor Rick Perry when he announced that they had been selected as sites for two new academic hospitals: One would be located on Interstate 35E near downtown Plano while the other would open up acres northeast of downtown near I-10 exit 143B known then as Northeast Freeway). With over 1 million square feet (100 thousand m2) dedicated exclusively to research these two hospitals will soon become some of America’s largest healthcare facilities ever built! Plano was founded on December 12, 1876 by businessman John A. Robertson as a town in Denton County, Texas. The town's original name was "Haleyville" after Haley, the then-governor of Texas. The first post office in Plano was established in 1878. In 1902, the city of Plano annexed the towns of Whitney and Garland to its boundaries. Plans for a downtown were started but never completed due to financial constraints. In 1966, Plano became part of Dallas when Dallas County was created from portions of Denton and Travis counties.
